Experts Call for Strengthened Palliative Care Policies at Ibadan Roundtable

It’s a step better at empathy especially for those waiting their time.

To mark the 2024 World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, the Center for Palliative Care in Ibadan, Nigeria, organized a roundtable discussion focused on the progress and challenges of palliative care.

The event, themed “Ten Years Since Resolution, How Are We Doing?” gathered healthcare experts and advocates to deliberate on the future of supportive care for individuals with chronic illnesses.

A speaker at the event, Dr Akinwale stood on the need for government timely intervention to improve palliative care services across all levels. He urged authorities to take concrete actions to develop, implement, and strengthen policies that can bolster the healthcare system’s capacity to provide quality end-of-life care. “Without robust policies, the health sector will struggle to support those who need these services the most,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the founder of the Center for Palliative Care, Professor Olaitan Soyannwo, provided deeper insights into the center’s function and its commitment to easing the burden for patients with chronic diseases.

She highlighted how the center’s services have been a lifeline for many patients, offering comfort, dignity, and essential support.

Professor Soyannwo shared, “Our mission is to ensure that every individual, regardless of their health condition, has access to care that allows them to live their remaining days with dignity and without pain. We cater to diverse communities, bringing relief to patients and their families.”

A beneficiary of the center’s care, Mrs Ajani Oluronkr shared her personal experience, expressing gratitude for the support she received. “Before finding this center, I was overwhelmed. They have provided not just medical care but emotional support, making my days easier,” she said, underscoring the vital role of palliative care in enhancing the quality of life.

The event also brought to light various facets of palliative care, from pain management to psychological support.

Discussions revealed that, despite global efforts to improve access, many communities still face challenges in securing adequate palliative services, a concern echoed by all participants.

A decade after the original resolution aimed at enhancing palliative care, there have been strides, but gaps remain. The event pointed out that local healthcare systems must be better equipped and staff trained to meet the growing demand for these services, especially in rural areas.

Nontheless, experts at the roundtable agreed on the importance of awareness campaigns to educate the public about palliative care, ensuring that patients can seek help earlier and benefit from available services.

“Education and awareness are as important as the care itself,” noted one expert.

The discussion concluded with a collective call for increased funding, training, and strategic partnerships to address the gaps in palliative care. The consensus was clear: strengthening policies and support systems can make a transformative difference for individuals facing chronic illnesses.

The Center for Palliative Care continues to lead in advocacy, aiming to build a network that provides comprehensive care, both in Nigeria and beyond. With dedicated professionals and supportive policies, the hope is to see palliative care become a fundamental part of the healthcare system, ensuring no one has to endure chronic pain without relief.
