The COP28 climate summit in United Arab Emirates is robbing off its climate relevant motives on Nigeria.

More than ever before, Nigeria is showing commitment towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future such that the sitting President, Bola Tinubu announced the launch of an initiative set to deploy 100 electric buses in Nigeria.

This strategic move is a pivotal part of the administration’s commitment to building a greener economy, particularly in the transportation sector.

Sharing Borders With COP28 Goals

President Tinubu while sharing this exciting development on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit has clarified that the Nigeria Carbon Market and Electric Buses Rollout Programme is not only reduce the country’s carbon footprint but also revolutionize its transportation systems.

President Tinubu, at the forefront of this transformative plan, outlined the broader objective of positioning Nigeria and Africa as leaders in green manufacturing and industrialization.

The emphasis lies on utilizing natural gas as a transitional fuel and integrating various renewable energy sources into the transportation landscape.

To spearhead the Nigeria Carbon Market Activation Plan, the president appointed Mr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and Mr. Dahiru Salisu, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). This strategic move underscores the administration’s commitment to effective implementation and impactful results.

During the COP28 Summit in Dubai, President Tinubu also reiterated his commitment to ending gas flaring in Nigeria and promoting a greener economic environment. He emphasized the implementation of policies and frameworks that would drive the growth of the carbon market within the national borders.

Leaping Above Emissions

President Tinubu’s vision extends beyond the electric bus initiative, representing a comprehensive strategy for environmental stewardship.

He stated:

“Our visionary plan is a strategic guidepost, directing Nigeria towards becoming an investment-friendly destination for carbon market investments.”

The commitment involves the implementation of enabling policies and frameworks to foster growth while upholding sustainable industrial practices.

To reinforce this commitment, the president approved the formation of an Inter-governmental Committee on Carbon Markets, chaired by the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change.

A Good Step Forward

President Tinubu also called upon global partners and investors to contribute to developing countries in their pursuit of achieving a net-zero future.

The deployment of electric buses is not only a practical step towards modernizing transportation systems but also a tangible symbol of Nigeria’s dedication to reducing Africa’s carbon footprint on the global stage.

As Nigeria readies itself to lead the global effort in combating climate change, the Electric Buses Rollout Programme is poised to become a landmark initiative, reflecting the nation’s commitment to sustainable progress.
