Debates have long been recognised as a powerful tool for sharpening critical thinking, public speaking, and research skills among students. The harder the topic, the more it challenges participants to think deeply and produce well-researched arguments.
Ahead of the upcoming Dare2Debate 2025 competition, students across Lagos are being encouraged to prepare thoroughly, researching topics and crafting speeches to effectively articulate their points of view.
By engaging in structured debates, young participants not only enhance their communication and listening skills but also build confidence that will serve them well in higher education and future careers.
“Debates instantly engage students while developing essential skills such as research, critical thinking, and public speaking,” organisers say.
“Regardless of the topics chosen, classroom debates get students thinking, talking, and reasoning constructively.”
Some of the debate topics that can improve the repertoire of participants include:
– Is it ever appropriate for the government to restrict freedom of speech?
– Should citizens who do not vote be fined?
– Should social media comments be protected by free speech?
– Should parents be required to vaccinate their children?
– Should performance-enhancing drugs be allowed in sports?
– Are video games too violent for children?
– Should schools block YouTube?
– Are single-sex schools better for student learning and mental health?
Other provocative topics challenge students to examine democracy, constitutional rights, parental responsibilities, environmental issues, and ethics in technology, medicine, and entertainment.
Organised by HACmedia, a Lagos-based multimedia firm, and endorsed by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dare2Debate is scheduled for December 13, 2025.
Already hailed as one of the most credible youth engagement platforms in Nigeria, the competition promises to showcase the next generation of critical thinkers and eloquent speakers.
