Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote has been named among the world’s most influential figures for 2026 by TIME, reaffirming his position as one of Africa’s most prominent voices in global business and economic development.
The annual TIME100 list, published on April 15, celebrates individuals whose ideas and actions are shaping the future across politics, business, technology and culture. Dangote, featured in the prestigious “Titans” category, stands as the only Nigerian on this year’s list, marking his second appearance after his initial recognition in 2014.
His inclusion places him alongside some of the most powerful figures on the global stage, including Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, Benjamin Netanyahu, Mark Carney and Pope Leo XIV. Leaders in technology such as Sundar Pichai and Neal Mohan were also recognised, highlighting the breadth of influence captured in this year’s rankings.
As founder of the Dangote Group, Dangote has built Africa’s largest indigenous industrial empire, with investments spanning cement production, sugar refining, fertiliser manufacturing and agriculture. In recent years, his expansion into the energy sector has further cemented his role in reshaping industrial capacity on the continent.
TIME, in its citation, praised Dangote’s long-term vision of building globally competitive industries rooted in African resources. His investments in manufacturing and infrastructure, the publication noted, are playing a critical role in reducing import dependence and driving economic transformation across multiple African economies.
Beyond business, Dangote’s influence has extended into philanthropy and development, with initiatives aimed at tackling poverty, improving healthcare and supporting education across the continent.
His recognition also reflects a broader trend of increasing African representation on the global stage, as leaders from the continent continue to shape conversations around development, innovation and sustainability.
