Corruption Must be Tired – O.Barat

When Nigeria knew corruption, she embraced it and impregnated it. Unfazed by its unnatural nutrient.

Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest economy and having abundant natural resources, continues to grapple with widespread poverty and systemic corruption. With around 68.9% of its population now living below the poverty line, the nation faces an uphill battle against economic inequality, exacerbated by regional disparities. This challenge persists despite various legal frameworks and anti-corruption agencies established over the years. Institutions such as the EFCC and ICPC have often been criticized for being politically motivated and ineffective, failing to prosecute high-profile corruption cases under successive administrations.

Regardless, corruption remains deeply embedded in Nigeria’s governance, manifesting in the misappropriation of funds and lack of accountability.

It’s the last leg that peddles survival across the gamut

The case of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, where funds meant for school feeding programs were allegedly embezzled, exemplifies this issue. Funds were reportedly siphoned off through various illegal transactions, yet efforts to prosecute those responsible have largely been ineffective, exposing a lack of political will to address these crimes.

Billions of Naira in public funds keep drowning in senseless projects into the pockets of a few.

The current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been under scrutiny for its approach to tackling corruption. Criticism has been directed at Tinubu’s government following allegations that joining the ruling party could absolve political figures of their past misdeeds, weakening public trust in anti-corruption efforts. Despite promises of reform, scandals involving misuse of funds and political protectionism continue to overshadow meaningful progress.

Historically, corruption cases in Nigeria have not been limited to the national stage. Former ministers and state governors have faced charges both within and outside Nigeria, revealing a global dimension to the country’s corruption crisis. Instances like James Ibori’s conviction in the UK for money laundering demonstrate the international community’s role in holding Nigerian officials accountable when domestic institutions fail to act.

One major impediment to anti-corruption efforts is Nigeria’s legal provision of immunity for political office holders, shielding them from prosecution while in office. This legal protection has allowed many politicians to evade justice, complicating the fight against graft. Upon leaving office, many secure legal protections to avoid prosecution, further entrenching a culture of impunity.

Economic reforms, such as the removal of oil subsidies and currency adjustments under President Tinubu’s administration, are seen as steps towards economic stabilization. However, the success of these measures depends heavily on the government’s ability to curtail corruption. The lack of accountability in the oil sector, especially concerning previous subsidy payments, underscores the need for transparency in Nigeria’s economic reforms.

Corruption has not only stunted economic growth but has also contributed to Nigeria’s security challenges. Issues like kidnapping, insurgencies, and ethnic clashes are aggravated by the misallocation of resources, poor governance, and corruption within the security sector. Effective management of national funds could improve infrastructure, security, and welfare programs, which are crucial for tackling the root causes of insecurity.

Corruption though relentless, has found its match in Nigerians.

For Nigeria to make real progress against poverty, robust and independent anti-corruption institutions are essential. There must be political will to prosecute corruption cases without fear or favor, eliminating political interference in legal processes. This will require significant reforms to ensure that anti-graft bodies can operate autonomously and effectively.

Additionally, reforms are needed to strengthen governance and accountability. Proposals such as gender-responsive procurement policies and social welfare initiatives could disrupt corrupt networks and provide much-needed support to vulnerable populations. By focusing on industrialization and local businesses, Nigeria can create more employment opportunities, which would help to address its economic challenges.

President Tinubu’s administration faces the delicate task of balancing economic reforms with social policies to alleviate poverty. The removal of subsidies and other economic measures must be complemented by efforts to reduce inequality and ensure that wealth is distributed equitably. This approach will be critical in rebuilding public trust and confidence in government.

Ultimately, Nigeria’s fight against corruption is inseparable from its broader development goals. As long as corruption remains unchecked, efforts to lift millions out of poverty will be hampered. A clear, concerted effort to address the root causes of corruption, coupled with strong governance reforms, is essential for the nation’s economic future.

To tackle these persistent issues, Nigeria must prioritize transparency, integrity, and accountability at all levels of government, ensuring that economic progress benefits the entire population rather than a select few.
