Climate Change Is Fueling a Mental Health Crisis in the World’s Most Vulnerable Communities

When the worst floods in more than a decade struck Nigeria in 2022, more than two million people were forced from their homes. Families crowded into displacement camps, mourning lost relatives, livelihoods, and futures washed away by the rising waters. Through the chaos, one need was as urgent as food and shelter, though harder to see: psychological survival.

“Every single day we provide trauma care and psychosocial support to more and more women and girls after sexual and gender-based violence,” said psychologist Aisha Bubah, founder of Idimma, a nonprofit offering mental health services in Nigeria. “And still, we can’t reach everyone.”

The rising human toll of climate change is often measured in homes destroyed, crops lost, or lives taken. Less visible, but no less devastating, are the impacts on mental health. From floods in West Africa to wildfires in Australia and hurricanes in the Caribbean, the emotional aftershocks reverberate for years.

The latest report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that climate-driven threats to mental health are on the rise worldwide, even as systems to support those most affected lag dangerously behind.

Children, the elderly, the disabled, and the poor, those already carrying the heaviest burdens of inequality are most at risk.

In Nigeria, the consequences are layered. As Bubah explains, the shrinking of Lake Chad devastated farming and fishing livelihoods, fueling the Boko Haram insurgency. Hunger and poverty deepened. Families displaced by violence were then battered again by floods linked to climate change.

The cycle is punishing: men leave home in search of work, women take on menial jobs, and children are left vulnerable. Gender-based violence, substance abuse, and suicide risk all climb in the wake of this upheaval.

“It’s a vicious cycle,” Bubah said. “Families and communities unravel.”

These are not just Nigerian challenges. Across the developing world, mental health professionals say climate change is compounding preexisting crises. The World Health Organization argues that the most effective responses are community-based — recognizing survivors not as passive recipients of aid, but as leaders in rebuilding resilience.

That principle is central to the approach of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the Asia-Pacific. “Our network of volunteers on the ground knows the culture and how to deliver the message in a way that the people can understand,” said Prednison Morales, the group’s regional coordinator for mental health and psychosocial support.

But while community engagement is vital, resources remain scarce. Nigeria has just one psychiatrist for every 700,000 people. Groups like Idimma have started training lay counselors to fill the gap, yet the need far outpaces the response.

Bubah believes hope lies in changing the way climate action itself is designed. “Mental health must be integrated into climate response from day one, not treated as an afterthought,” she said.

Meanwhile, experts also stress that numbers alone cannot convey the depth of this crisis. Reports can tally suicides, track cases of depression, or measure spikes in anxiety, but they do not capture the anguish of parents watching children go hungry, or the despair of families returning to find their villages gone.

As the climate crisis accelerates, so too does the urgency of reckoning with its invisible wounds. “The world must understand viscerally what is happening,” said one mental health advocate. “It’s not just about floods or droughts. It’s about the unraveling of people’s lives — and the resilience we either nurture or neglect.”
