Can Anta Rival Nike and the Rest?

It’s Anta’s world now, innit?

Anta Sports Products, often simply called ‘Anta’ is one of China’s largest and fastest-growing sportswear companies, increasingly showing up as a global competitor to brands like Nike.

The name “Anta” translates to “safe steps,” reflecting its roots in footwear. Founded in 1991 in Jinjiang, Fujian Province, the company began as a small manufacturer producing shoes, largely for other global brands. Over time, it evolved from a behind-the-scenes supplier into a powerful brand in its own right.

Its rise mirrors a broader Chinese industrial story: decades of manufacturing for Western companies gave firms like Anta the expertise, infrastructure, and supply chain advantage needed to compete globally. Jinjiang itself became known as the “shoe capital of the world,” with a dense network of suppliers, factories, and logistics systems that allowed companies like Anta to produce and deliver products at remarkable speed.

According to an article, a major turning point came in 2007, when Anta listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, raising significant capital and accelerating its expansion. Today, it operates over 12,000 stores across China and hundreds more internationally, with ambitious plans to grow in Southeast Asia and Western markets.

While it may not yet be a household name in the West, Anta is steadily building global visibility. It sponsors high-profile athletes like Eileen Gu and recently opened its first U.S. flagship store in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles with the intent to compete directly in premium markets.

Anta’s strategy is built on speed, scale, and vertical integration. Unlike many competitors, it controls much of its production process, from design to manufacturing to retail, allowing it to respond quickly to trends and keep costs competitive.

Its trajectory is similar to other Chinese firms like Xiaomi, which started as a service or component provider before expanding into full-fledged consumer brands.

Despite its rapid growth, Anta still faces stiff competition globally. Nike, for example, maintains a dominant share of the global sportswear market. But Anta’s deep manufacturing roots, aggressive expansion, and strong domestic base make it one of the most important challengers to watch.

In short, Anta is not just a sportswear brand, it represents the shift of Chinese companies from factory floors to global brand leadership.

Is Anta the next Nike?
