Africa Day: Institute Calls for 20-Year Ban on Former Politicians Seeking Office, Pushes for National Holiday in Nigeria

As Africa marks another year of unity and reflection, the Pan-African Dialogue Institute (TPADI) is making a bold call: a legislative ban on the re-entry of former public officeholders into politics for 10 to 20 years after completing their tenure.

The proposal was unveiled during a press conference in Abuja to commemorate Africa Day 2025. There, TPADI lamented how the “recycling” of political elites was coming at the expense of emerging talent.

TPADI President, Dr. Effiong Udo, lamented the dominance of familiar names in Nigeria’s political sphere—figures who move seamlessly from one high-ranking role to another.

“From governor to senator, minister, ambassador, or board member—the same people rotate power endlessly,” Udo said.

“We’re advocating a period of rest, of detachment from active politics, allowing space for new minds and younger leaders to emerge.”

Dr. Udo, an Associate Professor of Religious and Cultural Studies at the University of Uyo, said such a policy would serve the dual purpose of breaking political monopolies and reinvigorating Nigeria’s governance with fresh ideas and modern competence. He suggested that experienced leaders could still serve the nation as elder statesmen and mentors, rather than competing again for the same public offices.

Udo’s comments came during a broader discussion on the symbolic and practical relevance of Africa Day, observed globally on May 25 to honour the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU) in 1963.

He criticised Nigeria’s failure to officially recognise Africa Day as a national public holiday, describing it as a “symbolic void” that undermines Nigeria’s long-standing role in Pan-Africanism. “The giant of Africa cannot afford to ignore a day that celebrates African identity, liberation, and unity,” he said. “Across the continent, from Ghana to South Africa, Ethiopia to Namibia, Africa Day is recognised through parades, concerts, exhibitions, and government-led ceremonies. Nigeria must do the same.”

The institute urged the Federal Government to grant Africa Day the same status as other national holidays, saying it would reflect Nigeria’s historical contributions to African freedom struggles and enhance its visibility in continental affairs.

Udo used the occasion to call for a new leadership model across Africa, one rooted in Pan-African values and a shared destiny. He stressed that the continent’s biggest obstacles stem not from a lack of resources but from a leadership crisis marked by self-interest, corruption, and a failure to prioritise collective progress.

He cited the troubling paradox of African nations importing more than 70 percent of their food despite having vast arable land. “African leaders pay lip service to agriculture,” he said. “While other nations invest in food security, we are trapped in dependency. It’s a leadership failure.”

Udo also warned that neocolonial forces continue to stoke conflict across the continent and urged African leaders to reject foreign manipulation in favour of continental solidarity.
