Students from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have won three major awards at the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, outperforming teams from 40 countries in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and innovation categories.
The ABU team secured first place in the Cloud track, second place in the Computing category, and won the Grand Prize in the AI/Innovation category with a project called ParaVision.
They also received the prestigious Women in Tech Award alongside the Nigeria Network Team during the award ceremony held on June 5, 2026.
The global finals, held from June 2 to June 5, attracted 177 teams worldwide across network, cloud, computing, and AI/innovation tracks.

In a statement issued on Monday by the university’s Public Affairs Directorate, the institution described the achievement as a testament to its growing reputation in technology, innovation and digital skills development.
According to the statement, the Huawei ICT Competition began in October 2025 with more than 220,000 students participating globally before progressing through national and regional stages. The ABU team qualified for the global finals after excelling at the national finals in December 2025 and the Southern Africa regional finals in March 2026.
The university noted that the award-winning AI project, ParaVision, is an artificial intelligence-powered solution built on the Orange Pi AIPro platform and driven by the Huawei Ascend 310B4 chip.
Describing the innovation, the institution said the technology can conduct laboratory tests simultaneously or independently and generate printed reports in less than three minutes. It also features a multilingual interface supporting French, Arabic, Chinese, Swahili and several other languages.
The university further explained that participants in the network, cloud and computing categories faced an intensive eight-hour laboratory challenge designed to test their ability to solve real-world technological problems, while contestants in the AI/Innovation category were tasked with developing practical artificial intelligence solutions using Huawei technologies.
Members of the victorious team include Kumba-Banna Tekanyi, Yakubu Musa Yakubu, Adekunle Abdulroqeeb Oladimeji, Wakili Sefiu Bolaji, Yunus Muhammad, Ruqayyah Hassan Labo, Khadija Khalid and Grace Temitayo Olorunfemi.
The students were mentored by Dr. Bashir Halliru Sani of the Institute of Agriculture and Information and Communication Technology and Dr. Zaharaddeen Haruna of the Department of Computer Engineering.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Adamu Ahmed attended the event alongside other senior officials and hailed the students’ performance as evidence of the institution’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates capable of driving innovation and addressing real-world challenges through technology.
