These 3 Foods Can Cause Blood Sugar Spikes

Managing blood sugar is essential for overall health, especially for those at risk of diabetes or insulin resistance. While exercise and sleep play a role, diet remains the most critical factor. Nutritionist Cara Shaw from BlueIron has identified three food types that can cause sudden increases in blood sugar and recommends healthier alternatives to maintain steady energy levels.

1. Refined Carbohydrates (White Bread, Pasta, and Rice)

Refined carbohydrates are stripped of fiber, causing them to digest quickly and raise blood sugar levels. White bread, pasta, and rice convert into glucose rapidly, leading to sudden spikes.

Better Alternative: Choose whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, or whole-wheat bread, which provide fiber to slow digestion and support balanced blood sugar.

2. Sugary Drinks (Sodas, Energy Drinks, and Juices)

Many beverages contain hidden sugars that can raise blood sugar levels within minutes. Even fruit juices, despite being natural, lack fiber and lead to quick glucose absorption.

Better Alternative: Drink water, herbal teas, or smoothies made with fiber-rich ingredients like berries and chia seeds to help regulate blood sugar.

3. Processed Snacks (Chips, Crackers, and Sweets)

Packaged snacks often contain added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives, making them a common cause of blood sugar spikes. Even some granola bars labeled as healthy can have high sugar content.

Better Alternative: Opt for nuts, Greek yogurt, or hummus with vegetables, which provide protein and healthy fats to help keep blood sugar levels stable.

The Power of Low-GI Foods

Cara Shaw recommends adding lean proteins and healthy fats to meals to prevent sugar spikes. Low-GI foods break down slowly in the body, offering steady energy without sudden fluctuations.

Examples of Low-GI Foods:

– Berries, apples, and sweet potatoes

– Legumes like lentils and chickpeas

– Lean proteins such as chicken, fish, eggs, and tofu

Making mindful food choices can help maintain stable blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and support overall well-being.
