A newly approved drug, Anastrozole is now on the radar of global medicine as one that could stop the hurt of breast cancer for a long time.
The new drug after surviving a lengthy trial was authorised recently by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as an hormone treatment pill for breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
Anastrozole was already authorised for use in the treatment of breast cancer in post-menopausal women and has been used off-label for prevention. Â
A groundbreaking development
Breast cancer, a prevalent concern in the UK, affects approximately 1 in 7 women during their lifetime.
With the extended authorization of Anastrozole, a significant stride has been taken in reducing the risk for eligible women with a substantial family history of breast cancer.
The pivotal decision to approve Anastrozole for prevention was substantiated by the IBIS-II study, a rigorous international trial.
The study revealed that fewer cases of breast cancer occurred among women taking Anastrozole compared to those on a placebo.
This preventative medication involves a 1mg tablet taken daily for five years, offering women a proactive approach to breast cancer prevention.
Recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in 2017, its licensing by the MHRA aligns with NHS England’s medicines-repurposing program.
Anastrozole operates as an aromatase inhibitor, diminishing estrogen production in the body by blocking the aromatase enzyme.
Despite its tremendous potential, like any medication, it can have side effects. Common side effects include hot flushes, joint pain, skin rash, nausea, and more.
The safety and effectiveness of Anastrozole will be closely monitored by the MHRA, emphasizing the importance of reporting any potential side effects.

With an estimated 289,000 eligible women for this drug, there is immense potential to prevent up to 2,000 cases of breast cancer in England.

The chief executive at Breast Cancer Now, Baroness Delyth Morgan said:
“The extension of anastrozole’s license to cover it being used as a risk-reducing treatment is a major step forward that will enable more eligible women with a significant family history of breast cancer, to reduce their chance of developing the disease.”
In other words, the authorization of Anastrozole for breast cancer prevention marks a significant leap forward in the fight against this pervasive disease, promising hope for women at risk.
