Japan Braces for Record Rainfall as Typhoon Dujuan Nears Tokyo

Japan is bracing for record rainfall from a powerful typhoon expected to move close to Tokyo and surrounding areas on the country’s eastern coast.

Landslides and floods are feared as Typhoon Dujuan is expected to bring rains of up to 350mm in the Tokai region, 300mm in the Kanto and Izu Islands, and 200mm in Tohoku.

Some 300 flights have been cancelled and some train services have been suspended.

Dujuan, Japan’s 25th storm of the year, is packing sustained winds of 126km/h and gusts of up to 180km/h.

It is the latest in a wave of back-to-back storms in the Pacific, made more intense by this year’s “super” El Niño, which has warmed the ocean and fuelled the formation of storms.
