Body Shaming Push Back Ariana Grande From Public Life

The world is unforgiving and being a star doubles that part.

The triggers from her look on naysayers has forced Ariana Grande to take a break from public appearances after completing her current world tour, citing years of relentless public scrutiny over her appearance and personal life.

A statement issued by the singer’s spokesperson said Grande would step away from the spotlight after concluding the Eternal Sunshine Tour allowing her time to rest following what was described as “endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”

The statement added that the pop star hoped to finish the tour “on a high note, both healthily and happily” before taking a well-earned break from public-facing engagements.

As a result, Grande has cancelled several scheduled appearances, including a starring role in Stephen Sondheim’s stage musical Sunday in the Park with George, in which she was due to perform alongside Jonathan Bailey at London’s Barbican in 2027.

The announcement came just days after the release of her eighth studio album, *Petal*, and its title-track music video, which explores the pressures of fame, public expectations and celebrity culture.

In the video, Grande portrays a young performer repeatedly rejected by talent scouts who criticise her appearance, telling her to lose weight before later lamenting that they miss “the way you used to be.” The storyline ends with the fictional character violently turning on her critics, a scene many fans have interpreted as a metaphor for the emotional toll of constant judgment.

Grande has said the album was written from “an unfiltered rage,” reflecting frustrations built up over years in the spotlight.

The singer has faced renewed online discussion about her appearance in recent weeks, with some social media users expressing concern about her health, while others criticised the constant commentary surrounding her body.

Supporters rallied behind the Grammy-winning artist, making #WeLoveYouAriana trend on social media and urging the public to respect her privacy. Well, that’s not enough.

This is not the first time Grande has addressed public discussion of her appearance. In a 2023 video message, she urged people to stop commenting on others’ bodies, explaining that the period many believed she looked her healthiest was actually one of the most difficult times in her life.

She revealed that she had been taking antidepressants while struggling with unhealthy eating habits and alcohol consumption, stressing that outward appearance is not always an accurate reflection of a person’s wellbeing.

“Healthy can look different,” Grande said at the time. “You never know what someone is going through.”

Grande has spent more than 15 years in the public eye since rising to fame as a teenager on the Nickelodeon series *Victorious* before launching a hugely successful music career.

Beyond her chart success, she has endured several deeply personal challenges, including the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, the death of former partner Mac Miller in 2018, and years of intense media attention surrounding her relationships and mental health.

In recent years, the singer has become an advocate for mental health awareness, openly discussing her experiences with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trauma. Earlier this year, she also launched the Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, an initiative aimed at supporting the mental wellbeing of performers and touring crews.

Grande is expected to complete the remaining dates of her tour, including a series of concerts at London’s O2 Arena, before beginning her extended hiatus from public life.
