Humidity Is Redefining Climate Risk

What if the real danger during extreme weather isn’t just how hot or cold it gets but how moisture in the air magnifies it?

New research suggests that humidity is a critical, often overlooked factor that can turn already dangerous temperatures into life-threatening conditions.

A large-scale study analysing emergency ambulance dispatch data across 13 major cities in China between 2013 and 2019 reveals that temperature alone does not tell the full story. By combining meteorological data with health outcomes, researchers found that humidity significantly intensifies the body’s response to both heat and cold, increasing the risk of acute health emergencies.

Using advanced modelling techniques, including time-series quasi-Poisson regression and distributed lag non-linear models, the study examined how temperature and humidity interact over time.

The findings were clear: “compound” weather conditions such as hot and humid or cold and damp pose far greater health risks than temperature extremes alone. These combined exposures were particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions.

Humidity affects how the human body regulates temperature. In hot conditions, high humidity reduces the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In cold conditions, damp air can accelerate heat loss, making people feel colder than the actual temperature and raising the risk of hypothermia.

The implications are far-reaching. As climate change drives both rising temperatures and shifting humidity patterns, these compound risks are expected to become more frequent and severe. The study warns that future health burdens will increasingly tilt toward heat-related illnesses, especially in densely populated urban areas.

Global health authorities are already sounding the alarm. The World Health Organization has identified climate change as one of the most significant threats to human health, not only because of direct environmental impacts but also due to its strain on essential systems like healthcare, food security, and water access. It estimates that climate change could lead to an additional 250,000 deaths annually between 2030 and 2050 from causes such as heat stress, malnutrition, and infectious diseases.

Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that 3.6 billion people already live in areas highly vulnerable to climate impacts. This exposure is compounded by weak infrastructure and limited access to healthcare in many regions, increasing the risk of widespread health crises.

Further evidence from The Lancet Countdown highlights how climate change is intensifying health threats across multiple fronts, from extreme heat and air pollution to the spread of diseases.

Perhaps most concerning is the pressure on health systems themselves. Research suggests that one in twelve hospitals globally could face partial or complete shutdown due to climate-related hazards, underscoring the fragility of healthcare infrastructure in the face of escalating environmental stress.

Public health strategies must evolve to account for the combined effects of multiple environmental factors, especially humidity. Early warning systems, urban planning, and healthcare preparedness need to reflect this more complex reality.
