1.5C or Bust: Scientists Warn Earth is on the Brink of Climate Catastrophe

In what is now the most definitive scientific warning yet, 60 of the world’s leading climate scientists have declared that the Earth is racing toward a critical climate threshold and may be doomed if global warming breaches 1.5°C.

The warning, issued in the latest comprehensive assessment of the state of the planet, paints a stark picture of accelerating environmental decline, surging emissions, and dwindling time to avert irreversible damage.

“Things are all moving in the wrong direction,” said Professor Piers Forster, lead author of the report and director of the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds.

“We’re seeing unprecedented changes and the heating of the Earth, along with sea-level rise, is accelerating.”

Scientists have long warned that surpassing the 1.5°C limit above pre-industrial levels, the symbolic line drawn by the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement could lead to catastrophic climate impacts, from deadly heatwaves to disappearing coastlines and collapsing ecosystems.

Back in 2020, researchers estimated that humanity had just 500 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide left in its “carbon budget” to maintain a 50% chance of staying below 1.5°C. But today, that allowance has plummeted to just 130 billion tonnes, a figure slashed not just by soaring emissions, but also more accurate scientific modelling.

The current rate of warming stands at about 0.27°C per decade, a pace without precedent in Earth’s geological history. If emissions continue at present levels, the 1.5°C threshold could be reached by 2030, the study warns.

“This rapid change is not unexpected,” said Forster. “It is directly linked to very high emissions from burning fossil fuels and widespread deforestation.”

Despite pledges made in Paris nearly a decade ago, most nations have continued to burn record volumes of coal, oil, and gas, while simultaneously destroying the very forests that serve as natural carbon sinks. This inertia now places the Paris target perilously out of reach.

Even if the world overshoots the 1.5°C mark, scientists say the long-term temperature rise could theoretically be reduced but only through unprecedented efforts to remove massive amounts of CO₂ from the atmosphere. However, the authors caution that relying on unproven carbon-removal technologies is a dangerous gamble.

Yet, in view of the urgency, the report offers a sliver of hope. The rate of emissions increase appears to be slowing, thanks to a surge in clean energy innovations, electric vehicles, and shifting global attitudes.
