The Real Love Story Begins After “I Do”

The Real Love Story Begins After “I Do”

Indian Mr Romantic Shah Rukh Khan has this piece of advice for young couples. ( Do well to read )

You meet me in London, under a drizzling sky, and ask me for advice on marriage. You’ve just gotten married yourself, and you’re looking for guidance. I have to be honest with you, I felt the same way once.

When you asked me that question, Kajol, my friend and co-star, jumped in. She joked that all my films are about the chase, about winning someone’s heart. Not about what comes after. And she’s right.

In the movies, my job ends when the couple finally gets together. The music swells, the credits roll. But in real life, that’s where the real story starts.

So here’s what I’ve learned.

Don’t stop trying.

The biggest mistake is to think the work is done once you’re married. The truth is, you have to keep winning your partner’s heart, every single day. It doesn’t have to be grand. A text in the middle of the day. Remembering the small things they like. Making them laugh when they’ve had a hard day. That’s what keeps the connection alive.

Build your own story.

People ask me about DDLJ all the time. It’s a film about courage, about fighting for love. But marriage isn’t about one big fight or one grand gesture. It’s about the thousands of small, quiet moments in between. It’s creating your own rituals, your own private world. Don’t try to live someone else’s love story, build your own, brick by brick, day by day.

Learn to face the rain together.

At the statue unveiling here in Leicester Square, it poured. Kajol and I stood there, getting wet, laughing about it. Life will have rainy days. There will be challenges, disagreements, seasons where things feel hard. What matters isn’t avoiding the storm, but knowing you have someone standing beside you in it. That shared laughter in the rain is more valuable than any perfect, sunny day.

Finally, remember it’s a choice.

Love isn’t just a feeling that happens to you. It’s a choice you make, over and over. You choose to be patient. You choose to be kind. You choose to see the best in them, even on days when it’s difficult.

So my advice is this: Enjoy the beginning. The excitement is beautiful. But don’t be afraid of the next chapter. That’s where the depth is. That’s where you build something that lasts.

That’s the real love story. And it’s yours to write.
