In wildlife photography, patience often meets unpredictability and sometimes, the result is nothing short of extraordinary.

Thats the analogy when we think of how a striking image titled “Flying Rodent” by Austrian photographer Josef Stefan has captured global attention, freezing a surreal moment in nature that blurs the line between instinct and illusion.
Taken during a two-week stay in Torre de Juan Abad, in Spain’s Ciudad Real province, the photograph shows a young Iberian lynx in an unusual display, tossing its prey into the air and catching it repeatedly.
Stefan, who had spent days concealed in a hide waiting for the perfect shot, said the encounter lasted nearly 20 minutes. During that time, the lynx appeared almost transfixed, at moments standing upright on its hind legs, eyes locked on the airborne rodent.
“To me, it looked as if the rodent could fly,” he recalled, describing the scene as both mesmerizing and surreal.
The spectacle ended as abruptly as it began, with the lynx eventually losing interest and carrying its prey behind a bush to eat, returning the moment to the raw reality of the wild.
Beyond its visual drama, the image also highlights a powerful conservation story. Once on the brink of extinction in the early 2000s, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining, the Iberian lynx has made a remarkable recovery. Thanks to sustained conservation and reintroduction programmes, its population has now risen to over 2,000.
Despite this progress, the species remains classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, underscoring the fragile balance between recovery and survival.
The photograph stood out among dozens of entries in this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award, which drew a record 85,917 votes from wildlife enthusiasts around the world. Alongside the winning image, four other finalists were also highly commended, reflecting the growing global appreciation for nature through the lens of photography.
