Pope Francis’s body is headed to St Peter’s Basilica today as preparations for his funeral continue.
The day will begin with a prayer led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell before the late pontiff’s body is transferred from Casa Santa Marta to the basilica.
At 09:00 local time (08:00 BST), the coffin will be carried in a solemn procession through Piazza Santa Marta and Piazza dei Protomartiri Romani before arriving at St Peter’s Basilica.
Cardinal Farrell will preside over the Liturgy of the Word, a service consisting primarily of scripture readings.
The Pope’s coffin will then lie in state inside the basilica, allowing members of the public to pay their respects ahead of his funeral scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
