After years of stalled production, editing controversies, and distribution hurdles, the much-anticipated biopic of the late King of Pop, titled Michael, has finally released its first teaser trailer.
The film, led by Lionsgate and directed by Antoine Fuqua, has been in development for more than two years, with reports citing delays over its lengthy runtime and the removal of references to Jordan Chandler, the boy who accused Michael Jackson of sexual abuse in 1993.
The teaser, released on Thursday, November 6, instantly ignited global buzz. Fans got their first look at Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew stepping into his uncle’s iconic shoes. In the one-minute clip, Jaafar is seen gliding into the moonwalk, recreating Thriller choreography, and wearing some of Jackson’s most recognizable costumes.
According to WaveMetrix, the trailer amassed more than 100 million views within 24 hours, making it the most-watched biopic trailer of all time. With such a response, industry watchers say Michael could become one of the most successful biographical films in cinema history.
The film promises an intimate and expansive look at Jackson’s life, capturing both his personal journey and his career-defining performances, from his early days with The Jacksons to his 1983 moonwalk, the making of Thriller, and his celebrated 1993 Super Bowl performance. Viewers also spotted telling details in the trailer, including a shot of a cup of juice, a nod, fans believe, to Michael’s well-known love for orange juice, suggesting meticulous research and authenticity in the production.
Producer Graham King revealed that casting Michael Jackson took more than two years, culminating in the selection of Jaafar Jackson for what will be his first major on-screen role. Early reactions praise Jaafar’s uncanny ability to channel his uncle’s voice, mannerisms, and signature laugh.
“It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life,” Fuqua said in a statement to Variety. “There was such a spiritual connection when I first met him. He has a natural ability to emulate Michael and incredible chemistry with the camera.”
A global casting search also led to the selection of 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi, who will portray young Michael during his Jackson 5 years. Oscar-nominated Rustin actor Colman Domingo has also joined the cast as the Jackson family patriarch, Joe Jackson.
With its explosive trailer launch and growing fan anticipation, Michael is already shaping up to be one of 2026’s most talked-about releases.
