For millions of people in Nigeria, survival is becoming an exhausting daily calculation, one shaped by blistering heat, unreliable electricity, rising fuel costs, and shrinking environmental protection.
Across the country, temperatures have surged to extreme levels in recent weeks, exposing the fragile intersection between climate change and energy poverty. In cities like Abuja, Ikeja, Jalingo, Sokoto, and Maiduguri, temperatures have climbed as high as 42°C, leaving residents grappling with intense discomfort and growing health risks.
But the heat is only part of the story.
With erratic power supply forcing households and businesses to rely heavily on petrol-powered generators, the rising cost of fuel, exacerbated by global tensions involving countries like United States, Iran and Israel, has made basic survival increasingly expensive. For many Nigerians, electricity is a luxury, and cooling has become a costly necessity.
The result is a punishing cycle: as temperatures rise, so does dependence on air conditioners, generators, and refrigeration. That dependence, in turn, drives up energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, further intensifying the climate pressures already bearing down on the country.
Who is responsible for this torment?
According to data from the federal government and the United Nations Environment Programme, Nigeria now has an estimated 35 million air conditioning units, a dramatic rise from just over one million in 2010. Projections suggest that number could double by 2050, one that shows how ‘rapid cooling’ has become essential to daily life.

Yet this adaptation comes at a cost. Families are spending an increasing share of their income on energy, while businesses pass rising costs on to consumers, deepening economic strain. For low-income households, the choice is often stark: endure the heat or bear the financial burden of staying cool.
Health experts warn that the consequences are already unfolding. Godswill Iboma, of the Community Health Empowerment Foundation, links the extreme temperatures to a surge in heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, conditions once considered rare in the region but now becoming more common.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has also raised concerns, noting that rising humidity levels are compounding the effects of high temperatures, making conditions even more dangerous. Prolonged exposure to heat, combined with dehydration and poor ventilation, significantly increases health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
Environmental degradation is further worsening the crisis. According to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, Nigeria has lost an estimated 96 percent of its forest cover, leaving only a fraction of its natural shield against heat and climate extremes. The United Nations reports that the country has one of the highest deforestation rates globally, losing about 3.7 percent of its forests annually.
The loss of green cover not only intensifies heat but also disrupts ecosystems, forcing wildlife into human settlements and increasing exposure to environmental hazards.
Experts say the convergence of these challenges, extreme heat, energy instability, and environmental decline, is reshaping everyday life in Nigeria. What was once a seasonal discomfort is fast becoming a year-round crisis with far-reaching implications for health, productivity, and economic stability.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and seeking well-ventilated spaces. But for many Nigerians without reliable electricity or access to cooling, such advice offers little relief.
As the country confronts rising temperatures and deepening energy challenges, one question looms large: how long can millions continue to endure a system where staying cool, staying healthy, and simply getting through the day comes at such a high cost?
For now, Nigerians are yearning for a slice of heaven.
