Reports from different platforms show that a tentative diplomatic breakthrough has emerged in the escalating crisis between the United States and Iran, with President, Donald Trump announcing a two-week ceasefire, contingent on the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The agreement, unveiled shortly before a self-imposed deadline by Washington, signals a temporary pause in hostilities that had threatened to spiral into a broader regional conflict. Trump had earlier warned of catastrophic consequences if no deal was reached, raising fears of large-scale devastation.
Tehran has responded cautiously. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran would halt hostilities provided attacks against the country cease, stressing that the ceasefire does not signal an end to the conflict. Iranian authorities also confirmed they would allow “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz during the truce, a critical development given that the waterway handles a significant portion of global oil shipments.
According to Iranian officials, a 10-point ceasefire framework has been submitted to Washington through Pakistan, which has taken on a mediating role in the crisis. However, the ceasefire has already exposed fractures in regional dynamics. Israel, while agreeing to suspend attacks on Iran, has clarified that the truce does not extend to Lebanon. Israeli authorities issued fresh evacuation orders for residents in Tyre, signalling that military operations in Lebanon could continue despite the broader pause.
The announcement has had an immediate impact on global markets. Oil prices dipped following news of the ceasefire, easing some of the volatility that had gripped energy markets since the conflict began. Still, prices remain significantly higher than pre-crisis levels, reflecting ongoing uncertainty. In Asia, markets reacted positively, with major indices posting strong gains amid hopes of reduced geopolitical risk.
