Canada Sets Sights on the Moon with First-Ever Lunar Rover

Canada is preparing for its first journey to the Moon.

In a modest Ontario facility lined with maps of the cosmos and posters of distant galaxies, engineers in anti-static coats are assembling what will become the nation’s first lunar rover, a machine designed to explore Earth’s closest celestial neighbour and mark Canada’s entry into planetary exploration leadership.

The rover is being developed by Canadensys, a space systems company whose president and CEO, Dr. Christian Sallaberger, sees the mission as far more than a technological achievement.

“Sending this rover to the Moon is part of a broader strategy of really moving humanity off the Earth,” he told the BBC.

For Sallaberger, the lunar mission is a necessary first step in building a future where the Moon serves as a launchpad for deeper space exploration.

“This is the real thing,” he says with conviction. “People get all excited about science fiction films—Star Wars or Star Trek—but this is our chance to make that future tangible.”

The rover is part of NASA’s Artemis programme, a multinational effort to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon and, eventually, prepare for crewed missions to Mars.

Canada’s contribution will be vital: the rover will search for water and measure radiation levels, both crucial in determining how humans might live and work safely on the lunar surface. Designed to withstand multiple lunar nights, each equivalent to 14 Earth days—the rover must survive some of the harshest conditions known to science.

This pioneering vehicle also represents a continuation of Canada’s legacy in space. The country was the third nation to launch a satellite and went on to design the famed Canadarm robotic systems that supported both the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.

Its astronauts, from Chris Hadfield to Jeremy Hansen, have become household names, Hansen himself is set to orbit the Moon on NASA’s Artemis II mission next year.
