Balenciaga’s ‘Destroyed Jacket’: Has Fashion Crossed the Line Between Art and Absurdity?

Balenciaga has done it again. Just when the internet was catching its breath from the brand’s potato chip handbags and duct-tape accessories, the fashion house dropped its latest provocation – a “Destroyed Jacket” that looks like it barely survived a hurricane, a spin in a broken washing machine, and a zombie apocalypse. Yet, in the most Balenciaga way possible, the jacket sold out within 24 hours.

Priced at a staggering $950 (about N1.38 million), the heavily distressed outerwear, complete with torn sleeves, shredded hems, and holes large enough to question the point of owning it has reignited the global debate over what luxury truly means. For some, it’s a daring artistic statement. For others, it’s proof that the fashion world has officially gone off the rails.

The piece is part of Balenciaga’s ongoing experiment with deconstruction, a design philosophy that celebrates imperfection, exposing seams, rough edges, and raw textures as if to mock traditional luxury’s obsession with polish and perfection.

To its creative director, Demna, imperfection is the new premium. To many online critics, though, it’s simply “garbage couture.”

What’s fascinating is how the outrage only fuels demand. The more the public mocks it, the faster it sells. Memes have flooded social media, with one user quipping:

“Buy a $10 hoodie, run it over with a lawnmower, and congratulations — you’ve made your own Balenciaga jacket.” Another joked, “Pay $950 to look like your laundry lost a fight.”

But beyond the humour, there’s a deeper cultural conversation. In places like Nigeria, luxury is often equated with being pristine, new, and flawless.

The “Destroyed Jacket” defies that logic entirely, positioning decay and damage as status symbols. In a country where thrift fashion (popularly called okrika) is seen as low-end, Balenciaga’s piece flips the script: suddenly, what once signified poverty is now marketed as avant-garde affluence.

Still, the strategy is working. The controversy, the confusion, and the conversation, all of it, serve Balenciaga’s core goal: to stay relevant by staying disruptive. Every scandal sells, every mockery markets.

The “Destroyed Jacket” might look like something you’d rescue from a second-hand stall or toss out during spring cleaning, but in today’s fashion economy, it’s a badge of rebellion.
