The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF has appointed Nigerian tech and social entrepreneur Zephia Ovia-Ikem as its latest NextGen Champion.

This appointment is aimed at amplifying youth voices and strengthening private sector collaboration for child developmen

The announcement, made by UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Wafaa Saeed, points at the organisation’s commitment to working with leaders in business and philanthropy to improve education, innovation, and youth development outcomes across the country.

Ovia-Ikem, widely recognised for her work in technology, social impact, and youth advocacy, has been a long-time supporter of UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA) initiative—an effort focused on creating opportunities for young Nigerians to learn, train, and work.

As a NextGen Champion, she is expected to mobilise resources and engage with key business leaders to advance the rights and wellbeing of children and young people. Her role will include promoting youth inclusion and supporting initiatives that connect education and employment pathways for Nigeria’s growing youth population.

“Children and youths in Nigeria represent our greatest asset and brightest future,” Ovia-Ikem said following her appointment. “I am passionate about working with UNICEF to mobilise the resources, networks, and commitment needed to ensure every child and young person in Nigeria can thrive and access sustainable opportunities.”

UNICEF noted that her appointment aligns with its broader mission to ensure that every child, particularly those most vulnerable, can live, learn, and grow in safety and dignity.

The NextGen initiative is a global network of emerging leaders, investors, and changemakers who channel their expertise, funding, and influence toward UNICEF’s programmes.

Members have supported emergency responses, backed long-term education and healthcare projects, and championed youth representation on international platforms.

UNICEF currently operates in more than 190 countries and territories, continuing its mission to help every child, regardless of circumstance, reach their full potential.
