What Side of The Friendship Are You on?

Friendship, often overlooked in conversations about health and longevity, may be one of the most vital elements of human survival.

Science increasingly affirms what we’ve always felt — that having a strong social circle can extend our lives as effectively as a balanced diet or regular exercise. In an era of disconnection, this quiet truth feels radical.

Beyond the research, the fabric of friendship is made of simple yet profound threads: companionship, laughter, honesty, trust, and shared values. These are the invisible foundations that strengthen individuals and, by extension, communities. To honor a friendship is to honor humanity itself — by showing up, listening deeply, and allowing love to take ordinary forms like showing concern, making time, and keeping promises.

Psychologists like Dr. Marisa Franco call it an antidote to “relational loneliness” — the ache that emerges not from isolation, but from the loss of deep, platonic bonds that give our lives texture and meaning. We are, after all, wired for connection, not perfection.

Yet friendship, like all living things, evolves. Making space for it as our lives shift demands humility. It means letting go of the illusion that connection thrives only in calm or control. As therapist Julia Samuels notes, the real work lies in inviting our friends into our messy, unfiltered worlds. Share the chaos. Let them see the undone laundry, the crying baby, the overbooked calendar.

Instead of waiting for perfect reunions, Samuels suggests simple integrations: invite a friend along to the gym, on errands, even to the supermarket. Connection doesn’t need grandeur — it just needs presence.

If a friendship has drifted, rekindling it may begin with a single, small gesture. Dr. Franco recommends sending a message or voice note, perhaps recalling a shared memory. “Remind them of the moments that made your bond meaningful,” she says. These openings, however small, can bridge years of silence.

It also helps to recognize what she calls the “liking gap” — the tendency to underestimate how much others appreciate us. Often, our friends think more fondly of us than we dare to believe. Remembering this can make reaching out less daunting.

Friendships, then, are not fragile ornaments to be displayed only when conditions are right. They are flexible, resilient bonds that bend through time, distance, and difficulty. Trust that affection doesn’t expire just because life gets complicated.

And when it comes to reconnecting, structure helps. Organized activities — book clubs, pottery classes, shared hikes — offer the comfort of community without the pressure of hosting. They remind us that friendship can flourish through shared curiosity and collective rhythm.

At its heart, sustaining friendship is an act of resistance against a culture that prizes independence over interdependence. It is a vote for empathy, mutual care, and the radical idea that we need one another.

So perhaps the way forward lies in rebuilding what was lost — not just individual friendships, but the sense of village they represent. Sociologists call it “intentional community”: forming relationships with purpose, creating bonds that nurture both the self and the collective.

In my own life, I’ve found that true friends are not measured by frequency of contact, but by constancy of heart. Years may pass in silence, yet when we reconnect, it feels as though time has folded in on itself. That, perhaps, is the truest sign of friendship’s enduring power — it waits, quietly, and always welcomes you home.

Again, I ask, based on your inference from the aforementioned, what side of the friendship are you on?
