LAWMA Unveils Organic Waste Initiative to Tackle Emissions and Boost Recycling

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has launched a new organic waste management initiative aimed at cutting methane emissions, enhancing recycling, and reinforcing Lagos State’s climate action commitments.

The programme, developed in partnership with Proganics Limited, was announced at a stakeholder forum in Lagos designed to address the state’s growing organic waste burden.

LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, revealed that organic waste accounts for nearly half of the 13,000 tonnes generated daily in Lagos—around 6,500 tonnes—posing serious environmental and public health risks.

According to him, the initiative directly supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s COP28 pledge to reduce methane emissions and strengthen Lagos’s position in the global climate action movement.

As part of the programme, Proganics Limited has established a 200-tonne-per-day facility that uses Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology to convert food waste into animal feed and bio-fertilisers.

Gbadegesin added that LAWMA is deploying smart waste solutions, including RFID-tagged green bins and IoT sensors, to track and evacuate organic waste from high-volume generators such as restaurants and event centres.

“This innovation will improve operational efficiency, reduce pests and odours, and help businesses lower their waste bills,” he said, noting that financial rebates may also be introduced for organisations that comply with waste sorting requirements.

The initiative forms part of LAWMA’s broader strategy to modernise waste management, expand recycling, and mitigate climate change impacts across Lagos.
