Former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua could stage a historic homecoming bout in Nigeria next year. This is according to Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group, the promotional company behind the upcoming Chaos in the Ring event in Lagos.
Adamu revealed that discussions with Joshua’s camp have been “overwhelmingly positive,” raising hopes that the British-Nigerian boxing star will finally fulfill his long-expressed desire to fight in his ancestral homeland.
“I spoke with him, I spoke with his team, and they already said to me, ‘If we had an offer from Nigeria, it’s a match made in heaven,’” Adamu told The Ring.
“Joshua has always said that before he ends his career, he wants to fight in Nigeria, and we are going to make that fight happen.”
At the moment, plans are underway to stage the fight in the 50,000-capacity Abuja Stadium, with the promoter hinting at an all-African contest. Potential opponents being considered include Tony Yoka, Martin Bakole, and former WBC champion Deontay Wilder, who is also of Nigerian descent.
Dismissing speculation that the fight could be held in Ghana, Adamu insisted Nigeria remains the natural choice for Joshua’s return.
