Battling the Rising Tide: Floods, Invention, and the Race to Confront Climate Change in Nigeria

In the Mokwa area of Niger State, climate change has rolled in its devastating reality. More than 3,000 residents have been displaced by severe flooding, an event that state officials described as the worst in the region’s history. Once safe from flooding, Mokwa is now part of a growing list of communities grappling with the consequences of extreme weather.

“This level of devastation has never been recorded here before,” said Ibrahim Hussaini, acting director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. “Climate change, variability, and deforestation have brought floods to areas that were once considered safe.”

While emergency responders scramble to provide relief, Nigerian innovators are taking a deliberate leap toward long-term solutions.

In Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, engineer Anietie Ikott unveiled what he calls a revolutionary weather control technology—CLEB M543.

According to Ikott, this machine is capable of taming some of the planet’s most destructive weather patterns, including torrential rains, snowstorms, hurricanes, earthquakes, and cyclones.

“Climate change is the consequence of centuries of industrial pollution,” Ikott said during a press briefing at his residence. “CLEB M543 is designed to neutralise harmful atmospheric radiation, balance temperature and pressure gradients that trigger natural disasters, and eliminate toxic gases from the atmosphere.”

Currently undergoing a 21-day test phase, the technology claims to be both non-invasive and environmentally friendly, emitting no pollutants while potentially lasting for years.

While the science behind CLEB M543 awaits rigorous validation, it represents a growing appetite among Nigerian inventors to offer homegrown responses to global challenges.

Yet, not all solutions need to be built in laboratories. Climate advocates argue that policy and people-power are just as crucial.

Speaking in Kano to mark the 2025 World Environment Day, Auwalu Hamza, state coordinator of the Participatory Approach to Climate and Environmental Protection (PACE), emphasised that climate action must be shared by all levels of society.

“Mitigating climate change is a collective responsibility,” Hamza said. “Governments, private sectors, and individuals must take ownership. Climate change affects our health, livelihoods, and entire future.”

PACE, in partnership with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), is working at the intersection of governance and environmental protection to help Nigeria become more resilient.

From climate policy reforms to technological innovations like CLEB M543, the country is beginning to respond to its environmental emergency. But with more floods on the horizon, and millions living in vulnerable conditions, experts warn that time is running out.

Whether through engineering marvels or grassroots activism, Nigeria’s battle against climate change is gathering momentum. But without sustained commitment, the tide may prove impossible to hold back.
