BVN Abroad: How Nigerians in Diaspora Can Now Secure Their Identity for $50

Gone are the days when getting a Bank Verification Number (BVN) meant catching a flight back to Nigeria, queuing at a bank, and battling red tape. For Nigerians living abroad, a revolutionary shift is now underway. With a laptop, internet connection, and $50, diaspora Nigerians can now obtain their BVN from anywhere in the world—without stepping foot on Nigerian soil.

Thanks to a collaborative initiative by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) platform was officially launched in May. It’s a digital leap that promises ease, convenience, and security for millions of Nigerians navigating life outside their homeland.

According to CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, the platform is a major step toward boosting financial inclusion, enabling Nigerians abroad to access financial services and strengthen their ties to the Nigerian economy. The NRBVN system was designed with the digital-savvy diaspora in mind—those who want access to remittance services, digital banking, and investments without the burden of bureaucracy.

The platform offers a sleek, online process: Nigerians abroad can register at authenticate their identity, upload key documents, pay the $50 processing fee, and receive their BVN—all within 72 hours.

The NRBVN isn’t just about personal banking; it’s about restoring identity and enabling full participation in the Nigerian financial system. From buying property to investing in startups back home or accessing pension accounts, the BVN remains a critical tool for verifying one’s identity and reducing fraud.

What to Do

Step 1: Visit the NRBVN Portal

Head to https://nibss-plc.com.ng/nrbvn/ to begin your registration. You’ll need a valid email address.

Step 2: Register and Activate

Once registered, a verification link will be sent to your email. Click on it to activate your account and proceed to create a password.

Step 3: Enable Two-Factor Authentication

To secure your account, you’ll be prompted to scan a QR code using any 2FA app such as Google Authenticator.

Step 4: Select Your Status

Choose your user category:

Nigerian with no BVN

Nigerian with BVN

Nigerian by descent

Step 5: Upload Required Documents

You’ll need:

●Nigerian passport (valid or expired)

●Proof of foreign residency (e.g., foreign passport, green card, residence/work permit)

●Utility bill

●Proof of employment or tax payment

●Foreign bank account statement

Step 6: Pay the $50 Fee

A mandatory, non-refundable $50 fee (around ₦80,000) is required. Payments are processed via Tazapay, a secure global payment gateway, using Mastercard or Visa.

Step 7: Await Confirmation

After submission and screening, your NRBVN will be generated and sent to you—typically within 72 hours.

Be Aware

The platform reinforces Nigeria’s growing commitment to digital transformation, tightening KYC (Know Your Customer) protocols and monitoring cross-border financial activity.

While the digital option brings convenience, some are raising eyebrows over the price tag. In Nigeria, registering for a BVN is free, but diaspora Nigerians must now cough up $50. With the naira trading at about N1,600 to the dollar, that fee converts to roughly N80,000, a steep cost for what some say should be a basic right.

But for many, the trade-off is worth it: no queues, no airfare, no lost time.

The success of the NRBVN platform could mark the beginning of more diaspora-focused digital services. As Nigeria tightens its regulatory oversight of fintechs and money remittance platforms, ensuring citizens abroad are securely linked to the home financial grid is vital.
