Lagos Trains 500 Polytechnic Students in CNG Conversion as Nigeria Pushes for Cleaner Energy Future

As Nigeria intensifies its transition from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the Lagos State Government has launched a one-month intensive training programme to equip 500 polytechnic students with hands-on skills in CNG vehicle conversion.

The initiative, which brings together polytechnic students from across the South-West, was officially flagged off at the Yaba College of Technology. It was organised in collaboration with the Mojisola Olayinka Fatungase Edema Foundation and the South-West Zone of the National Association of Polytechnic Students.

Themed “The Future of CNG in Nigeria: Empowering a Sustainable Tomorrow,” the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s national CNG agenda and aims to deepen local capacity in clean energy technology.

Speaking at the launch, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the initiative as a timely response to the nation’s urgent need for cleaner fuel options.

CNG emits significantly fewer pollutants compared to petrol or diesel.

“It’s win for the environment and a big step toward meeting Nigeria’s climate commitments,” Osiyemi said, urging the participating students to embrace the opportunity to become leaders in the emerging energy space.

According to a statement by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola, the training will be led by seasoned professionals and culminate in certifications for participants—enhancing their job readiness and contribution to Nigeria’s green energy goals.

In her keynote address, Engr. Funmilade Akingbagbohun, former National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, described the programme as a “strategic dual-purpose effort,” combining youth empowerment with environmental action.

She also pointed out the economic benefits of CNG, including lower operational costs for vehicles and reduced dependency on imported fossil fuels.

“By equipping 500 students with specialized skills in CNG technology, we’re not just producing technicians—we’re nurturing innovators who will help shape Nigeria’s sustainable energy future,” she said.

This training is part of aggregated efforts to tackle the rising fuel costs and embrace cleaner, locally driven energy solutions.
