Thousands of Nigerians and other African nationals seeking to enter or remain in the United Kingdom may face heightened barriers following sweeping immigration reforms unveiled by the British government.
The new policy measures, outlined in the UK’s Immigration White Paper released on May 12, 2025, signal a significant tightening of migration rules. These include restrictions on overseas recruitment in the care sector, higher salary and skill thresholds for work visas, and stricter conditions on student, family, and asylum routes.
Among the most impactful changes are the scrapping of the social care visa route, reduced time limits for graduate visas, extended settlement timelines, and mandatory English proficiency tests for dependants.
These changes could disproportionately affect Nigerian migrants, many of whom enter the UK through education and health-related pathways.
While the proposals have drawn criticism from migrant advocacy groups, the British High Commission in Nigeria has sought to downplay fears. In a statement, it reaffirmed the UK’s strong ties with Nigeria, acknowledging the “valuable contribution” Nigerians make to the UK’s economy and society.
“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK is still considered a top destination for Nigerians to work, study, visit and settle,” a spokesperson said.
They added that the reforms aim to restore “order and fairness” to the system, reduce net migration, and bolster the British economy — and promised that changes would roll out gradually.
The UK also pledged to engage with the Nigerian government as more details on implementation become available.
This comes following separate reports that the UK may soon limit visa access for citizens from countries with high rates of overstaying — with Nigeria reportedly among those under review.
