The Nigerian Diet Isn’t Helping, You Need Vitamin D

Let’s face it, Nigeria’s food culture, while rich in taste and tradition, often lacks essential nutrients. For many, it’s a daily hustle to eat whatever’s available, not necessarily what’s healthy.

The idea of a balanced diet sounds like luxury talk to those barely getting by. But the consequences of this “survival eating” are showing up in one subtle yet powerful deficiency: Vitamin D.

Globally, over 44% of adults are Vitamin D deficient. In Nigeria, that number is likely underestimated due to poor testing and awareness. Vitamin D is crucial, not just for strong bones, but for a strong immune system, reduced inflammation, muscle function, and even blood sugar regulation. Without it, the body is running on low power.

And here’s the kicker: people with darker skin, like most Nigerians, naturally produce less Vitamin D from sunlight. That means even under the blazing African sun, your body might not be making enough of this essential nutrient.

If your diet isn’t stepping up—and for most, it isn’t—you’re likely falling short. Yeah.

So, where can you get your Vitamin D fix

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for your plate:

– Fatty fish like salmon (383–570 IU per 3 oz)

– Cod liver oil (450 IU per teaspoon)

– Sardines (164 IU per can)

– Fortified milk (115 IU per cup)

– Yogurt (116 IU per 8 oz)

– Orange juice (100 IU per cup)

It’s not magic—just mindful eating. And if digestive issues like celiac disease are in the mix, or your diet is restricted, supplements may be necessary. You don’t have to break the bank; a simple D3 supplement could make all the difference.

The Mayo Clinic recommends:

– 400 IU for babies under 1 year

– 600 IU for those under 70

– 800 IU for seniors over 70

Nigeria’s diet needs more than pepper, rice, garri or fufu. It needs purpose. Vitamin D is not a luxury, it’s your body’s fuel to function, fight, and flourish.

So next time you pick up that plate, ask yourself: Am I feeding my hunger or my health?
