U.S. Vice President JD Vance has suggested putting a timer on the visas of foreign students whose presence may run contrary to the country’s interests.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News recently, Vance indicated that this measure aligns with the Trump administration’s broader immigration policies aimed at increasing deportations.
He acknowledged that the issue might be framed as a matter of free speech but emphasized that, at its core, it is about national security and the authority of the U.S. government to determine who remains in the country.
According to Vance, both the Secretary of State and the President have the power to decide whether a foreign student should stay, and if they are found to have no legal right to remain, deportation would be the next step.
“This is not fundamentally about free speech,” Vance said. “Yes, it’s about national security, but more importantly, it’s about who we, as an American public, decide gets to join our national community.”
He admitted that the number of deportations under this approach could rise, though the exact figures remain uncertain.
