“It’s heart-breaking that in such a holy month, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly,” says Hisbah deputy commander in Kano, Mujahid Aminudeen after raiding some violators.
The Islamic police in Kano State had gone ahead to arrest some 25 persons for violating Ramadan fasting rules.
The clampdown targeted both individuals eating in public and food vendors operating during fasting hours.
The deputy commander of the Hisbah, Mujahid Aminudeen, confirmed to the BBC that 20 Muslims were detained for not fasting, while five others were arrested for selling food. He informed that these enforcement operations would continue throughout the holy month, which began on Saturday.
Aminudeen also clarified that the crackdown applies strictly to Muslims, stating:
“It is important to note that we don’t concern ourselves with non-Muslims.”
He added that any act of “disrespect” toward Ramadan would not be tolerated.
All 25 individuals have been charged in a Sharia court and will face appropriate penalties, according to Hisbah officials.
