Lake Chad Basin: Climate Crisis, Conflict, and Resilience

Everything is bearing the weight of climate insincerity including Lake Chad. The Lake Chad Basin faces a web of environmental and security challenges, where climate change, deforestation, and extremist violence intersect, placing millions of lives at risk.

This shrinking but resilient lake covers about 2.5 million square kilometers across eight countries. The basin is home to nearly 52 million people, with 3 million living directly near Lake Chad. The lake, fed primarily by the Chari and Logone Rivers, fluctuates dramatically due to seasonal and long-term climate variations. While past studies suggested it was shrinking, recent research (2024) indicates that the lake recovers seasonally, with a maximum water extent of 18,800 km² in 2022, including vegetated flood zones.

However, erratic rainfall patterns driven by climate change have led to extreme weather swings. Frequent droughts alternate with intense rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods, which devastate farmlands and displace communities. Rising temperatures also accelerate evaporation, further stressing the fragile ecosystem.

Reports say the region’s instability is exacerbated by militant groups like Boko Haram, whose attacks have forced entire villages to flee, creating one of Africa’s most severe humanitarian crises. The combination of environmental degradation and conflict has made livelihoods, particularly fishing and farming—precarious.

Can The Lake Adapt?

It has become clearer too, that efforts are underway to help communities adapt. The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in partnership with Canadian organizations, is implementing the Gender Transformative Climate Adaptation project.

The report stresses:

The communities around Lake Chad have always lived by its water rhythms. Now, as climate change impacts intensify, they must find new ways to adapt.

The Lake Chad Basin lies in the Sahel, on the southern edge of the Sahara. The basin is enormous, covering 2.5 million square kilometers (965,255 square miles), or 8% of the African continent, straddling eight countries. Lake Chad sits at the end point of this drainage basin, an unexpected bounty of water in a dry land. An estimated 3 million people live near the lake, and 49 million more live in the basin and depend on its resources.

As it stands.

This initiative works with 69 villages in Chad and Cameroon, focusing on reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and water management. Key actions include:

– Tree planting (neem, acacia, moringa) to combat desertification and provide shade.

– Sustainable fishing to protect aquatic ecosystems.

– Conflict resolution and disaster risk reduction to support stability.

According to IPCC reports and scenarios, we will have an increase in extreme precipitation of 10 to 30% by 2050. This intensification of precipitation would increase the risk of overflowing of the Chari and Logone rivers.

Despite the challenges, local communities are embracing nature-based solutions, proving that with the right support, resilience in the Lake Chad Basin is possible.
