China’s New Chatbot ‘Deepseek’ Has Sent ChatGPT, Others Into a Frenzy

The launch of Chinese AI app DeepSeek has sent shockwaves through the global tech industry, triggering a sharp reaction from U.S. President Donald Trump, who called it “a wake-up call” for American AI firms.

Interestingly, just a week after its release, DeepSeek has become the most downloaded free app in the U.S., raising questions about the future of AI dominance.

Its biggest selling point? The AI model behind it—DeepSeek R1—was reportedly built at a fraction of the cost of its competitors, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. This has caused stock values of major tech firms to dip as investors scramble to assess the implications of a cheaper and equally powerful AI alternative from China.

How Does DeepSeek Compare to ChatGPT?

Early users have put DeepSeek through a variety of real-world tests, and the results have been eye-opening. From writing assistance to coding and brainstorming, DeepSeek is proving to be a strong competitor in AI-driven productivity.

When tested for its ability to summarize historical sports figures, both DeepSeek and ChatGPT delivered solid results, with DeepSeek’s response appearing more structured and factually detailed. However, it made minor errors—such as including non-Scottish players in a list of Scotland’s greatest footballers—while ChatGPT remained more precise.

For creative writing, ChatGPT generated multiple short ideas for a children’s story about a boy living on the moon, while DeepSeek produced a full-fledged story. While the writing quality wasn’t exceptional, its ability to deliver a complete narrative in seconds showcased its potential as a storytelling AI.

Coding Capabilities Impress Developers

The coding community has been particularly impressed by DeepSeek’s problem-solving abilities. AI researcher Javier Aguirre, who specializes in medical AI, noted that DeepSeek solved a particularly complex coding issue “at once and straight to the point”, outperforming ChatGPT’s previous model.

Google’s Head of Chrome Developer Experience, Addy Osmani, highlighted that engineers are now using DeepSeek alongside Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model, describing the combination as “the best new hybrid coding model”.

He also noted that DeepSeek is “significantly cheaper” than both Claude Sonnet and OpenAI’s latest model.

For learning and research, DeepSeek provides concise but less detailed responses compared to ChatGPT. While explaining the causes of World War I, DeepSeek covered the main events but lacked the depth and nuance that ChatGPT provided. However, for users seeking quick overviews rather than in-depth analysis, DeepSeek’s approach may be preferable.

Google’s Gemini also entered the comparison, offering similar summaries while integrating links to authoritative sources like the Imperial War Museum, something neither ChatGPT nor DeepSeek currently provides.

DeepSeek’s arrival has rattled Silicon Valley, with analysts questioning whether OpenAI and Google can maintain their dominance if Chinese firms continue to develop cheaper, high-performing models. The U.S. government has already raised concerns about China’s AI advancements, with President Trump warning that America “cannot afford to fall behind in this race.”

The app’s rapid adoption suggests that affordability and accessibility may be game-changers in AI development. While OpenAI and Google have focused on refining their models with vast computing power and extensive datasets, DeepSeek’s success suggests that cost-effective innovation could reshape the market.
