Most often than not, “world people” fail to recognize the depth, complexity, and resilience of women. However, “God Bless Women” a stirring poetry collection by Palmwine Sounds, seemingly lifts the spirit in this direction.
This is more than a book; it speaks to the strength, grace, and diversity that define women in every corner of life. As a woman, I found myself profoundly seen, heard, and celebrated within its pages.
From the very first poem, it is evident that God Bless Women goes beyond mere homage—it is an exploration of the many roles women play, the challenges we face, and the triumphs we embody. Take the opening poem, Yansh, for example: while it begins as a playful nod to the physical allure of the female shape, it quickly evolves into a deeper recognition of the strength and vitality housed within women’s bodies. It’s a powerful reminder that we are not just objects of admiration but vessels of resilience, deserving of respect and honor.
The poem Black Queens emerges as a vivid imagery celebrating the beauty, strength, and diversity of African women. It paints a mosaic of culture, shades, and experiences, uniting women in shared pride and acknowledging the unique contributions each one brings to the rich narrative of womanhood. This celebration of diversity resonated deeply with me, reinforcing the idea that every woman’s story, no matter where she comes from, is essential and valuable.
The verses dedicated to mothers, grandmothers, and aunts are especially poignant. Poems like Sweet Mother evoke a sense of nostalgia and reverence, capturing the tireless, often unseen sacrifices made by the women who nurture us. Through tender imagery—like a mother tucking her child into bed—the poem encapsulates the quiet strength and unconditional love that define motherhood. It is a heartfelt tribute to the women who hold families together with unwavering devotion.
Women’s World boldly challenges the outdated notion that this is “a man’s world,” instead asserting the indispensable role of women as life’s architects. It strengthens the truth that behind every strong man is a woman whose support and empowerment made his journey possible. These verses foster a sense of pride and unity among women, reminding us of our power to shape not just lives but legacies.
Then there’s Polygamy Dreams, a playful yet thought-provoking exploration of relationships and desires. It tackles a deeply controversial subject with light-hearted humor, leaving room for diverse perspectives and prompting the reflection that, indeed, “to each their own.”
As I flipped the pages of this creative construct “God Bless Women” I felt an overwhelming appreciation for the stories shared—stories that reflect the collective experiences of women everywhere. Each poem is a reminder of the beauty, strength, and resilience that define us, urging us to embrace and celebrate our identities unapologetically.
This collection is more than poetry; it is a call to honor the divine essence of womanhood, to uplift and inspire, and to remind every woman that her story matters. For me, God Bless Women is not just a tribute to women; it is a gift—a celebration of our existence, our struggles, and our triumphs.
