Fashion’s New Frontiers: Recycling, Representation, and Reinvention

Information flows through fashion too.

The global fashion industry continues to grapple with sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity. Despite challenges in textile recycling and evolving consumer preferences, strides are being made to reshape the narrative around fashion’s future.

Sustainability Challenges in Textile Recycling

Pioneers in textile-to-textile recycling face turbulent times. Renewcell, once a trailblazer in producing recycled cellulosic pulp, filed for bankruptcy in February after sales fell short of expectations. Yet, optimism remains. Private equity firm Altor acquired Renewcell’s assets in June, signaling faith in the recycling market. Similarly, H&M Group and Vargas Holding are championing polyester recycling through their $200 million Syre project, which aims to begin commercial production by 2025.

Major brands like Gap Inc. and MAS have also committed to sourcing recycled materials. However, critics caution against viewing recycling as a panacea. Recycled products still contribute to microplastic pollution, underscoring the need for holistic solutions to fashion’s environmental impact. Recyclers argue their innovations are essential for markets that won’t disappear overnight.

Polène: A French Brand on the Rise

French direct-to-consumer brand Polène is riding a wave of success, expanding globally after achieving €142 million ($153 million) in sales in 2023.

Founded in 2016, the brand opened its first London store near Piccadilly Circus in 2024 and has plans for new locations in Munich, Miami, and Dubai. “We aim to open five to eight stores annually,” said CEO Antoine Mothay.

Polène’s growth mirrors a trend among French brands like Sézane and Rouje, which have thrived as brick-and-mortar shopping rebounds. Polène’s strategy emphasizes blending physical stores with a strong digital presence. “People see us as a digital brand, but our success started with our stores,” Mothay explained. Notably, the brand has been profitable since its inception.

Vans Reinvents Its Cool Factor

Vans is reinventing itself with OTW by Vans, a premium label launched in February. Focused on remixing staple designs and introducing fresh styles, OTW represents Vans’ efforts to reconnect with younger consumers and boost sales. The brand has also made strategic hires, including Sun Choe, former Lululemon chief product officer, as its global brand president.

“We’re rethinking what Vans products can be,” said Ian Ginoza, OTW’s vice president and creative director. Though OTW represents a small segment of Vans’ overall business, its exclusive releases and innovative approach highlight the brand’s commitment to regaining relevance.

Indigenous Representation Takes Center Stage

Representation in fashion is shifting, led by Indigenous models like Quannah ChasingHorse. Of Hän Gwich’in and Oglala Lakota heritage, ChasingHorse has walked for Chanel and Gucci and graced covers of Vogue Mexico and Japan. Using her platform, she advocates for hiring Native models and respecting Indigenous aesthetics, such as natural hair and traditional tattoos.

Her success has sparked a surge in Indigenous talent. Between 2020 and 2024, nearly two dozen Indigenous models signed contracts with luxury brands like Bottega Veneta and Chloé. Models like Valentine Alvarez (Marc Jacobs) and Denali White Elk (Gucci) are making waves, marking a pivotal moment for Native representation.

From sustainability challenges to cultural representation and product reinvention, the fashion industry is navigating a transformative era. While the road is complex, these shifts point to a more inclusive and innovative future for fashion.
