2024: A Year of Turmoil, Lessons, and Resilience for Nigerians

The year 2024 began with optimism, buoyed by the slogan “No gree for anybody,” which echoed the determination of Nigerians to overcome challenges. However, the months that followed turned turbulent, revealing hard lessons that shaped the nation’s collective memory.

Explosions in Ibadan: A Shattering Start

The year opened with tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, as illegal mining activities triggered explosions that claimed two lives, injured several others, and destroyed property. The blasts dominated public discourse, raising urgent concerns about the safety of unregulated mining across the country.

The Anthem Controversy

2024 also saw the adoption of a new national anthem, a move met with widespread criticism and discontent. Despite the initial hype, the anthem’s significance faded quickly, with many questioning its relevance amidst the country’s pressing challenges.

Minimum Wage Stalemate

The introduction of a ₦70,000 minimum wage sparked both hope and frustration. While the policy received national approval, its implementation remains elusive in several states, leaving many workers disillusioned.

Local Government Autonomy: A Legal Tug-of-War

In a landmark ruling on July 11, the Supreme Court upheld the financial autonomy of local governments. Yet, powerful political actors have resisted its full implementation, stalling progress and fueling debates about governance and federalism.

Mass Protests and Brutal Repression

August brought mass protests as thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to decry the rising cost of living. Demonstrations across the six geopolitical zones were met with violent crackdowns, resulting in scores of deaths and over 1,000 arrests. These protests, which became a symbol of youth resilience, highlighted the urgent need for socio-economic reforms.

A Cabinet Reshuffle with Mixed Reactions

On October 23, President Bola Tinubu announced a major cabinet reshuffle, replacing five ministers, appointing seven new ones, and reassigning 10 others. While he retained key figures in finance, defence, and energy, the reshuffle was viewed as a response to growing public dissatisfaction. Tinubu described the move as essential, stating, “Nigeria is too big to be administered by a few hands.”

Frequent Blackouts: A Dark Year

2024 was marked by over a dozen national grid collapses, plunging cities like Abuja, Lagos, and Kano into prolonged darkness. The persistent power outages disrupted daily life and underscored the dire state of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

Alau Dam Collapse: A Humanitarian Crisis

One of the year’s gravest disasters occurred on September 10, when the Alau Dam in Borno State collapsed, releasing 112 billion litres of water. The ensuing floods displaced over one million people, submerged villages, and left 414,000 residents severely affected. The tragedy exposed gaps in Nigeria’s disaster management and prompted calls for urgent infrastructural upgrades.

Stampedes Mar the Yuletide

The festive season turned tragic as stampedes over food items in Ibadan, Abuja, and Anambra claimed at least 65 lives. The incidents highlighted the deepening economic hardship and the desperation of many Nigerians during a financially strained December.

Losses in the Arts, Politics, and Business

The year also saw the passing of notable figures across various sectors. From veteran entertainers like Jimi Solanke, Onyeka Onwenu, and Mr. Ibu to political and business icons like Ifeanyi Ubah and Herbert Wigwe, Nigeria mourned a staggering number of luminaries. Among them was journalist Waju Akin Emmanuels, whose contributions to media left an indelible mark.

Lessons and a Call for Resilience

As 2024 draws to a close, it leaves behind a tapestry of highs and lows. While the year tested Nigeria’s resilience, it also underscored the need for collective action to address systemic issues. Citizens and government alike must draw lessons from the challenges of 2024 to build a more stable and prosperous 2025.

A Hopeful Outlook for 2025

Every year offers a chance to start anew, and 2025 is no exception. As Nigerians bid farewell to a turbulent year, the hope remains that the coming months will bring brighter days and stronger resolve.

Happy New Year in advance, Nigeria!
