Artificial Intelligence can bring about transformative shift in the health ecosystem. It is happening in the occident, it is possible in Nigeria.

Nontheless, Nigeria’s healthcare communication is witnessing a transformative shift as global and national organizations emphasize technology and social media’s critical roles. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently highlighted the necessity of leveraging social media platforms to ensure accessible, actionable, and timely public health messaging. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Centre for Management Development (CMD) unveiled an innovative AI tool to improve access to public health information and decision-making.

Recall that WHO explained the integration of six core principles into public health communication: accessibility, relevance, credibility, timeliness, actionability, and understandability. These principles guide the use of diverse formats, such as infographics, videos, and plain language storytelling, ensuring that critical health information reaches decision-makers and the public efficiently. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok are central to this strategy, offering a dynamic way to engage audiences with real-time updates on emergencies, outbreaks, and health campaigns.

In tandem with WHO’s efforts, Nigeria’s CMD aims to localize the benefits of artificial intelligence in healthcare. The recently launched AI tool is designed to address challenges in accessing and interpreting public health data. By using this technology, the CMD seeks to empower healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers with advanced data analytics for evidence-based decisions. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, positioning the country as a leader in using technology for sustainable development.

Managing Director/CEO of Corona Management System, Chijoke Kaduru who analysed Africa’s public health landscape, stating:

“The progress Africa makes in addressing public health issues will depend on how well we understand the nature of the challenges we face.”

However, the effective implementation of these initiatives requires collaboration. Public health experts stress the need for partnerships between government agencies, tech companies, and communities to build trust and enhance digital literacy. Trust is particularly vital in a country like Nigeria, where misinformation can easily spread. By ensuring credibility through transparent and culturally relevant communication, stakeholders can counteract the spread of false health narratives.

In practical terms, these tools and strategies are already making a difference. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, digital platforms played a significant role in disseminating accurate information, debunking myths, and promoting vaccination drives. The AI tool promises to extend these benefits, offering predictive insights into health trends and enhancing Nigeria’s preparedness for future pandemics.

According WHO Nigeria Country Representative, Walter Mulombo developing social media strategies for implementing and monitoring information on social media is crucial before, during, and after disease outbreaks.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with issues such as maternal mortality, infectious diseases, and non-communicable illnesses, the intersection of technology and communication offers a beacon of hope. By addressing barriers like accessibility and misinformation, these advancements promise to democratize health information and improve outcomes across diverse demographics.

Ultimately, the synergy of WHO’s guidelines and Nigeria’s AI-driven solutions could serve as a model for other developing nations seeking to revolutionize public health communication in the digital age.
