Great things they say starts with a step. This is one of them.

“LightOut” campaign, initiated by Viamo in partnership with the Foundation for Leadership and Education Development, visited secondary schools in Lagos to educate over 600 students on climate change.

Through engaging workshops and hands-on activities, students learned about renewable energy, reducing carbon footprints, and sustainability practices. The campaign emphasized the need to foster eco-conscious habits from a young age, aiming to inspire students to become advocates for environmental change both within and beyond their communities.

The recent “LightOut” campaign took climate change awareness to secondary schools in Lagos, urging young students to embrace environmental responsibility. Organized by Viamo in partnership with the Foundation for Leadership and Education Development, the initiative marked an important step in educating the next generation about climate action.

The campaign engaged over 600 students, equipping them with insights on renewable energy, sustainability, and how daily habits contribute to global warming.

The sessions focused on practical measures students could adopt to reduce their carbon footprint, such as minimizing waste, conserving energy, and planting trees.

This program aims to inspire youth to be part of the solution to climate change. A notable aspect of the event was its hands-on approach—students didn’t just hear about climate issues; they actively participated in discussions, experiments, and demonstrations that brought these concepts to life.

According to speakers at the event, this grassroots educational effort is essential. They emphasized that nurturing a culture of sustainability starts early, and teaching students practical skills would have long-lasting effects. Schools, they believe, are the perfect places to seed these habits and expand them to communities.

The event also highlighted the importance of renewable energy, with workshops focusing on how solar and wind energy can offer cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels. Students were introduced to the idea of sustainable energy sources and were shown how even small changes, like using solar lamps, can make a difference.

In addition to environmental benefits, students were also taught about the economic advantages of renewable energy, encouraging them to think creatively about how such solutions could be integrated into their daily lives. This aspect underscored the message that sustainability isn’t just about conservation; it’s also an avenue for innovation and economic growth.

Teachers and facilitators expressed enthusiasm about the program’s impact, noting that students left with a sense of responsibility and empowerment. Organizers hope these young advocates will carry their newfound knowledge beyond school, inspiring family members and peers to adopt eco-friendly practices.

The “LightOut” initiative underscores a broader message: educating the youth is key to driving meaningful climate action. By planting seeds of awareness and responsibility, campaigns like these can inspire a new generation of environmentally-conscious leaders ready to address the climate crisis.
