Leading music artists and celebrity actors from West and Central Africa have come together to release a powerful new song, “No More Zero Dose,” aimed at reigniting support for childhood immunization across the region.
The song was launched on World Polio Day and features 12 prominent musicians and UNICEF Champions, including Cobhams, Ali Nuhu, Kate Henshaw, Mawndoe, Omawumi, Stanley Enow, Timi Dakolo, and WAJE, among others.
The track apparently sends a clear and urgent message: every child deserves protection through vaccination. It also highlights the need to address the issue of zero-dose children—those who have never received any vaccine—by promoting immunization against preventable diseases like polio and measles. Through a blend of vibrant sounds and meaningful lyrics, the song hopes to inspire communities to ensure every child receives life-saving vaccines.
Statistics show that West and Central Africa remains the region with the lowest immunization coverage globally. According to recent data, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP3) coverage in the region was at 69% in 2023, dropping from 72% in 2019. The region has also seen multiple outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, diphtheria, and yellow fever, underscoring the need for improved vaccination rates.
The urgency of this campaign is evident in the statistics. So far, in 2024, Africa has reported 138 polio cases, with nearly half of these cases recorded in Nigeria. Last year, the continent saw 506 cases. This alarming trend indicates that millions of children remain unprotected, and the song “No More Zero Dose” serves as a call to action to reverse this situation.
UNICEF’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou who recalled that the critical importance of this initiative “Zero-dose children are the most vulnerable,” said:
“Ensuring they receive life-saving vaccines is vital for their future. This song amplifies that message. We can and must reach every child and eradicate polio.”
The project is spearheaded by Nigerian music producer Cobhams Asuquo, who expressed hope that the collaboration would inspire collective action. “As a UNICEF Champion, I urge everyone to join us in the fight against preventable diseases,” said Cobhams. “Music is a powerful tool for change, and this song is a mission to spread hope and health across Africa.”
Meanwhile, UNICEF Nigeria’s Country Representative, Cristian Munduate explained the significance of the initiative for Nigeria, a country still facing a high number of under-vaccinated children. She says: “This collaboration reflects the deep commitment to ensuring every child receives life-saving vaccines. Through music, we are amplifying the message that no child should be missed.”
“No More Zero Dose” is currently available on YouTube and is set to launch on various streaming platforms.
