The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games commenced with a breathtaking opening ceremony, making history as the first of its kind to be held outside a stadium in the French capital.
Athletes paraded down the iconic Champs-Elysées, starting from the Arc de Triomphe and ending at the Place de la Concorde.
The event, attended by an estimated 65,000 spectators, symbolized the beginning of a “Paralympic revolution,” as described by Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet.
Key moments included the vibrant atmosphere as British athletes Lucy Shuker and Terry Bywater carried the flag for ParalympicsGB, while French flagbearers Nantenin Keita and Alexis Hanquinquant were greeted with rapturous applause.
The ceremony not only celebrated the athletes’ resilience but also marked the start of 11 days of intense competition, with 4,400 athletes from 168 delegations vying for 549 gold medals across 22 sports.
This event also highlighted the significance of inclusivity and the power of sport in bringing people together, as France hosts its first-ever summer Paralympic Games.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have sold two million tickets, with 500,000 still available. The games will utilize many Olympic venues, such as Stade de France for athletics and La Defense Arena for swimming.
As expected, yhe Para-triathlon will take place in central Paris, with a swim in the River Seine.
Russia and Belarus remain banned due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, though some athletes will compete under the Neutral Paralympic Athletes (NPA) banner.
However, notably, Eritrea, Kiribati, and Kosovo are making their Paralympic debut. The event which opened on Wednesday, August 28, will climax on September 8.
