Hunger Crisis: Urgent Actions Nigeria Must Take

Food inflation, or “foodflation,” has become a pressing issue in Nigeria, driving many citizens to the brink. With over 80-82 million Nigerians projected to be at risk of severe food crises by 2030 and about 22 million facing food insecurity in 2023, immediate action is necessary.

Current Challenges

Nigeria, like many other nations, faces several challenges that threaten agricultural productivity:

– Food Shortages

As an agrarian society, Nigeria’s food availability directly depends on the productivity of its farms. Leveraging technology is essential to strengthen the agricultural industry and ensure food security.

Alarming Forecasts

The United Nations recently forecasted that 82 million Nigerians, approximately 64% of the population, may go hungry by 2030. This dire prediction brings to mind the urgent need for the government to address climate change, pest infestations, and other threats to agriculture.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that Nigeria’s food inflation rate hit a record high of 40.66% in May 2024, surpassing the previous month’s increase of 40.53%. Historically, Nigerian food inflation has ranged from -17.50% in January 2000 to an average of 13.42%.

Also, The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated that between June and August of 2024, at least 2.6 million Nigerians in Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, and the Federal Capital Territory may experience a food crisis.

Recall that a government-led Cadre Harmonisé research published in March 2024 indicated that close to 4.8 million people in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe are suffering from extreme food insecurity, the largest number in seven years.

Knuckling Down to the Task

Enhancing Irrigation Practices

The government must support farming practices that utilize irrigation to mitigate the reliance on direct rainfall. Building dams and directing wastewater for agricultural use can significantly reduce water waste and improve crop yields.

Promoting Off-Season Farming

The government should take off-season farming seriously. Currently, 70% of crops in Nigeria are planted relying on direct rainfall, with only a small percentage using irrigation systems. Facilitating off-season farming by assisting with irrigation systems can help stabilize food production and supply throughout the year.

Leveraging Technology

Maximizing the use of technology in agriculture is essential. This includes:
– Implementing advanced pest control measures
– Utilizing climate-resilient crop varieties
– Employing precision agriculture techniques
– Developing efficient water management systems
