Nigeria Activates National Cholera Emergency Operation Centre Amidst Outbreak

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated a National Cholera Multi-Sectoral Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in response to the ongoing cholera outbreak across the country.

The Director-General of NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, announced the activation in light of the escalating cases and expressed concerns about the potential exacerbation of the situation during the rainy season.

Dr. Idris emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The activation of the National Cholera EOC underscores our unwavering commitment to protect the health and well-being of every Nigerian.”

The EOC serves as the central coordinating body for the nationwide response, facilitating support to affected states, enhancing communication, data analysis, and aiding in decision-making processes.

Recall that since the beginning of the year up to June 24, 2024, Nigeria has recorded 1,528 suspected cholera cases and 53 deaths across 31 states and 107 local government areas, with a case fatality rate of 3.5%.

Dr. Idris lamented the timing of this public health emergency, noting that it comes on the heels of recent outbreaks of Lassa fever and meningitis in the country.

The activation of the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre lends credence to Nigeria’s proactive approach in managing and containing infectious disease outbreaks, particularly amidst challenging environmental and health conditions fuelled by seasonal factors like the rainy season.

As efforts intensify, the NCDC remains committed to mitigating the spread of cholera and safeguarding public health across the nation.

Please Note:

To stay free from cholera, especially during outbreaks or in areas where the disease is prevalent, here are some quick tips:

1. Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.

2. Drink Safe Water: Ensure drinking water is safe by either boiling, chlorinating, or using water purification tablets. Avoid drinking untreated water from potentially contaminated sources.

3. Eat Safe Food: Consume only thoroughly cooked hot foods and avoid raw or undercooked seafood, fruits, and vegetables that may have been washed in contaminated water.

4. Maintain Sanitary Conditions: Use proper sanitation facilities and ensure sewage is disposed of safely. Avoid open defecation and ensure toilets are clean and functional.

5. Vaccination: In areas prone to cholera outbreaks, consider vaccination if recommended by healthcare authorities or if traveling to high-risk regions.

6. Avoid Street Food: Be cautious of food prepared and sold in unhygienic conditions, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation facilities.

7. Educate Yourself: Be aware of the symptoms of cholera, such as severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.

8. Promote Community Awareness: Encourage others in your community to follow similar hygiene practices and take precautions against cholera.

By following these simple yet effective tips, individuals can reduce their risk of contracting cholera and contribute to the prevention of outbreaks in their communities.
