Oyo State Launches Comprehensive HPV Vaccination Campaign to Combat Cervical Cancer

The Oyo State Government has taken a major step towards eradicating cervical cancer by incorporating the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine into the Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI). This ambitious initiative is targeting over 639,049 girls aged between nine and 14 years old across the state.

The official launch of the vaccination program took place on Monday, May 27th at St. Paul Anglican Primary School in Yanbule, Bashorun,Ibadan where over 300 pupils received the vaccine. The event marked the beginning of a state-wide campaign designed to ensure no girl is left unprotected.

Representing the First Lady of Oyo State, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, Chief Mrs. Ajibola Lawal, wife of the State deputy governor, stressed the vaccine’s crucial role in reducing HPV infections and, consequently, cervical cancer.

Mrs. Lawal also highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to battling cervical cancer, stressing that the introduction of the HPV vaccine is a testament to their dedication.

“This initiative not only aims to alleviate the cervical cancer burden in Nigeria but also promises a healthier, brighter future for our young girls,” she stated.

On the other hand, Oyo State Health Commissioner, Dr. Oluwaseresimi Ajetunmobi, reassured the public of the vaccine’s safety and efficacy. She dispelled prevalent myths, confirming that the HPV vaccine does not cause infertility. “We urge all parents to ensure their daughters receive this life-saving vaccine,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board,Dr. Muideen Olatunji who spoke on the critical need to address cervical cancer, rehashed the collaborative efforts required to protect young girls and women from this serious disease.

Dr. Olatunji assured that the Agency has thoroughly trained healthcare professionals to administer the vaccine, which will be given on the left upper arm. The program includes comprehensive measures to reach every part of Oyo State, ensuring broad accessibility.

Dr Olatunji harped: “Our goal is to utilize this opportunity to significantly reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer and protect the lives of our citizens, particularly young girls aged 9 to 14,”. He dotted on the inclusive nature of the campaign, stressing that both in-school and out-of-school girls within the target age range will be vaccinated.

The Oyo State Primary Health Care Agency plans to set up vaccination points in common areas such as markets, palaces, and central locations to ensure that no one is left out.

The launch of this vaccination campaign demonstrates Oyo State’s proactive stance in safeguarding the health of young girls and women. By vaccinating over 639,049 girls, the state aims to make a substantial impact on reducing the incidence of cervical cancer.
