“Alté defines a safe space of free expression, especially for those otherwise marginalized in mainstream society.”

Living the Alté life is a daring journey that might label you an outcast. However, take solace in the uniqueness of your path.

Alté, the rapidly growing subculture emerging from Lagos, Nigeria, has transitioned from being a subgenre in the Nigerian entertainment, art, and music industry to gaining widespread recognition and acceptance in the mainstream.

The term “Alté,” pronounced locally as (uhl-teh), was initially coined by DRB Lasgidi to describe their style and sound in a 2014 song.

Aside from promoting individualistic expression, particularly through music and fashion, the subculture also draws inspiration from nostalgia.

While it began making its mark on the Nigerian mainstream in the late 2000s, it wasn’t until the late 2010s that the genre truly solidified its presence. However, it brought along its own unique culture, one that received a mixed reception from the public.

The alte movement has also morphed into songs

Despite the increasing mainstream appeal of the Alté scene, many still struggle to grasp the essence of the subgenre and subculture as a whole. Some even perceive individuals within the subculture as devil worshippers due to their unconventional styles, aesthetics, and themes that often challenge conservative cultural and religious beliefs.

Quick Check On What The Alte Culture Is about

The Alte culture, originating from Lagos, Nigeria, is a vibrant and dynamic subculture that celebrates individuality, creativity, and freedom of expression. Here are some key aspects of the Alte culture:

1. Free Expression: Alte culture provides a safe space for individuals to freely express themselves without conforming to mainstream societal norms. It encourages people to embrace their uniqueness and express their identity through various art forms such as music, fashion, art, and lifestyle choices.

2. Music: Music plays a central role in the Alte culture. Alte music is characterized by its eclectic blend of genres, including afrobeat, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music. Artists often experiment with unconventional sounds and lyrics, pushing the boundaries of traditional Nigerian music.

3. Fashion: Fashion is another integral part of the Alte culture, with individuals expressing their creativity through avant-garde and eclectic styles. Alte fashion is known for its mix of vintage, streetwear, and Afrocentric elements, creating a unique aesthetic that reflects the diversity of the culture.

4. Non-Conformity: Alte culture celebrates non-conformity and rejects mainstream stereotypes. It encourages individuals to embrace their quirks, challenge societal norms, and carve out their own path in life.

5. Inclusivity: Alte culture is inclusive and welcoming to people from diverse backgrounds. It provides a platform for marginalized voices and celebrates diversity in all its forms.

Overall, Alte culture is about embracing individuality, creativity, and self-expression, while challenging societal norms and fostering a sense of community among its members.
