What Makes Monday Special? – By Dimmachukwu Ndubuisi

Did you know that the average person groans for 34 minutes on a Monday, compared to the 22 minutes on other days? Yes, it’s because it’s Monday.

While Monday offers a fresh start, a clean slate, a day to seek out new opportunities to many, some view it as a dreadful day filled with tight deadlines and heavy workloads with very little time to catch a breath.

Is Monday really a special day different from the rest? Is it overemphasized? What makes it a day everyone anticipates?

Dimmachukwu Ndubuisi made efforts to find reasonable answers to why Mondays are such an enigma. He writes:

Historically, the name Monday comes from the Old English word “Mōnandæg,” originally a translation of Latin “dies lunae” which means “day of the Moon.”

Although seven days make a week, Mondays, to a lot of Nigerians, stand out as the most anticipated, serious, and stressful day of the week.

A 1975 classic from Fela Kuti is an apt description of what Monday represents to many Nigerians as it buttresses the adventurous atmosphere that comes with it.

Even though Monday is a big deal for Fela and many Nigerians, is it so for everyone?

A cross-section of Nigerians who had different views about what Monday is to them say it comes with a different energy that everyone catches subconsciously. After then, what? – a gradual descent into the mundane?

Speaking on why Monday can be such a pressure cooker for individuals, organizations, as well as businesses, renowned farmer and entrepreneur, Mayowa Ekundayo while sharing insights on this, said there is always a pile of pressure on people to deliver on their workload from the previous week or weekend.

A lecturer, public analyst, and researcher, Dr. Ajewole Olumide, who sheds more light on the reason many pay so much attention to Mondays, believes the verve and values that come with it are irreplaceable, compared to other days of the week.

A writer on medium, Marisa Hoenig thinks likewise, she says:

“Believing that Mondays are the best day of the week changes your perspective. It allows you to look at the week optimistically — who knows what the next 7 days will hold.”

Why Mondays Are Special

Several factors contribute to making Mondays stand out as a unique day, including:

1. Fresh Start: Many people see Mondays as an opportunity for a fresh start, setting goals and intentions for the week ahead.

2. Workweek Beginning: For those who work traditional Monday to Friday schedules, Monday marks the start of the workweek, bringing with it new tasks and challenges.

3. Busy Schedule: Mondays often come with a busy schedule, catching up on work and meetings after the weekend break.

4. Productivity Mindset: Some individuals approach Mondays with a productivity mindset, aiming to accomplish tasks and projects early in the week.

5. Social Events: Certain social and cultural events, such as Monday night football or gatherings, may make Mondays special for some people.

6. Psychological Impact: The perception of Mondays as the beginning of the week can have a psychological impact, influencing mood and motivation.

Overall, the combination of a fresh start, busy schedule, and productivity mindset contributes to making Mondays stand out as a significant day for many people.

Muhammad Ali once said, “Don’t count the days, make the days count.” This suggests that Mondays, just like any other day, signal a new beginning riddled with its twists and turns.

Rather than grovel and lament, plan ahead, prepare, and take charge of your Monday like a champ.
