Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, a visionary figure in the Nigerian banking sector, was born on August 22, 1966, hailing from Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

A graduate of Accounting from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, Wigwe embarked on a remarkable journey that left an indelible mark on the financial landscape of Nigeria.

Before his passing, Wigwe was diligently working on his most ambitious project, the establishment of Wigwe University. With a staggering $500 million investment, this institution aimed to revolutionize higher education in Nigeria and West Africa, offering world-class education in management, science, engineering, and the arts, amalgamating traditional methods with innovative technology.

Married to Chizoba Wigwe (nee Nwuba), Wigwe was a devoted family man with four children: Chizi, Tochi, Hannah, and David. His professional journey saw him rise through the ranks in the banking sector, particularly in Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).

Collaborating with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, he played a pivotal role in the acquisition of Access Bank, a transformative move that propelled the bank from the 65th position among 89 banks in Nigeria to a top-tier financial institution.

Subsequently, succeeding Aig-Imoukhuede as the Managing Director of Access Bank, Wigwe embarked on a visionary quest to elevate the bank into a global powerhouse, a goal he achieved during his lifetime.

Under his leadership, Access Bank transcended geographical boundaries, evolving into a financial conglomerate with a global presence. Today, Access Bank boasts over 6.5 million account holders and ranks among the top 500 global banks.

Under a month ago, the late Wigwe had posted this cryptic message on X.

Wigwe’s influence extended beyond the realm of banking, as he served in various capacities, including as the Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited and as a member of esteemed boards.

His legacy lives on as a testament to his unwavering dedication, innovative spirit, and transformative leadership in the Nigerian banking industry.
