Canada’s Cost Hike: Can Fleeing Nigerians Afford the New Proof of Fund Policy?

It’s no longer news that Nigerians are exiting their country in droves to settle as emigrants in less listless countries like Canada. But, the requirements to settle into this first world country is becoming more financially draining.

In a recent move that has sparked waves of discussions and concerns, Canada has significantly increased the Proof of Funds requirements for study permit applicants from other countries, including Nigeria.

The new threshold, set at $20,635, marks a whopping 106.4 percent increase from the previous requirement of $10,000.

According to a statement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on Thursday, this policy shift will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.

The announcement, made by Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, emphasizes the need for international students to be financially prepared for life in Canada.

The move comes after nearly two decades of the Proof of Funds requirement remaining at $10,000, signaling a significant departure from the status quo.

He says:

“Starting January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada.”

The revised financial requirement, representing 75% of the Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO), aims to ensure that students have the necessary financial resources to navigate the cost of living in Canada.

As of 2024, a single applicant must demonstrate they possess $20,635, in addition to covering their first-year tuition and travel costs. The decision, according to the statement, is designed to prevent student vulnerability and exploitation.

This policy adjustment prompts a critical question: Can Nigeria afford Canada’s new Proof of Fund requirements?

For close to two decades, the $10,000 benchmark has been a familiar figure for study permit applicants including students.

However, the substantial increase may pose challenges for prospective Nigerian students aspiring to pursue education in Canada. The heightened financial threshold aligns with global trends as countries reassess their immigration policies in the wake of evolving economic landscapes.

This development unfolds in the backdrop of the United Kingdom introducing stringent visa rules that could impact Nigerians seeking entry.

Recall that before now, home Secretary James Cleverly recently announced changes, including a higher minimum annual salary for foreign workers eligible for a skilled worker visa.

As students and potential immigrants assess these evolving requirements, the significance of financial preparedness and strategic planning becomes paramount.

The dynamics of international education and immigration are shifting, urging individuals to adapt to new financial landscapes.

For those eyeing Canada as their educational destination, the Proof of Funds adjustment signals a paradigm shift.

Will Nigeria’s aspiring students rise to the financial challenge, or will this change alter the educational dreams of many? Only time will reveal the true impact of this policy shift on the aspirations of Nigerian students aiming for a Canadian education.
